Holiday Happy Hour 2010
Holiday Happy Hour 2010

On December 1st, nearly 200 of Junior Achievement's guests, supporters, volunteers and board members joined us to celebrate the holidays, spend a little time together and do some holiday shopping.

This event was our way of thanking all of you who have been a big part of 2010's success. We are so appreciative of everything you have done for us this year and are glad so many people were able to attend so we could thank you in person!

We hope you continue to join us in our mission to bring JA programs to every child in San Diego and Imperial Counties. See you in the New Year and have a lovely holiday season!

Join the Friends of JA Club

It's an exciting year for us here at Junior Achievement!  We are officially kicking off a Friends of JA Club for you to give back to the community!

A small monthly donation to JA of just $19.50 will help us reach more students and develop the future leaders of our global economy.  Friends also get your own tile forever dedicated to you (or anyone you wish) in front of our building to show that you care.

Click here to see what other perks you get as a Friend of JA.  We will keep adding surprises throughout the year.  And if the Friends of JA Club doesn't work for you, please keep us in mind for your end of year donations.

Titan Competition Brings Out the Business Leader in High Schoolers

2010 Titan WinnersJunior Achievement San Diego hosted its 4th Annual Titans of Industry Challenge on Friday, December 10th at National University.  Teams from Patrick Henry, Clairemont, San Diego and Hilltop High Schools competed in two rounds of play.

Clairemont High's Academy of Business & Technology (AOBT) brought six teams, and their Team 2 took home 1st Place, brand new Sony laptops.  Their other ABOT teams dominated the first round so the second round was primarily a fight between Clairemont teams.  Other prizes included shopping cards for Fashion Valley Mall.

The JA Titan game is set in the year 2035 and the simulation creates a world in which players are CEOs of their own companies. During the game, students ran a manufacturing company and master six key business decisions:

  • price of product
  • production levels
  • marketing expenses
  • research and development costs
  • capital investment level
  • charitable giving

In-class volunteers work with high school classes for six sessions before the teams go to competitions. Click here for more information about JA Titan.

Thank You Teachers!

Our 3rd Annual "I'm Thankful for My Teacher" campaign has wrapped up and once again, we received thousands of thank you notes for the fantastic teachers of San Diego County in partnership with Mission Federal Credit Union and Cox Communications, so keep an eye out for the winners in an upcoming newsletter!  Thanks to MFCU, six classes will be lucky winners of JA classes, so keep your fingers crossed and thanks again for another successful year!

Thank a Teacher

Featured Alumni: Ahmed Abbas

JA Alumni: Ahmed AbbasMaking tie dyed t-shirts, and selling bagels and donuts on Fridays was Ahmed Abbas' first introduction to Junior Achievement back in Ohio where he attended Centerville High School. "My involvement with JA provided me invaluable lessons about leadership and interviewing skills at a relatively young age," said Abbas.

After graduating from Wright State University in 2001, Abbas moved to San Diego from Ohio and immediately became engaged locally as a Junior Achievement classroom volunteer and Bowl-a-Thon coordinator while at Deloitte.

In 2006, when he started at Sempra Energy/SDG&E, he continued his dedication as a JA classroom volunteer and Bowl-a-Thon coordinator. Since 2009, Abbas has represented Sempra Energy and SDG&E on Junior Achievement's Board of Directors. Abbas co-chairs the Program Action Team making sure JA continues to make a significant and positive impact on local students.

His enthusiasm for JA has also spread to the University of San Diego where he teaches Principles of Financial Accounting as an Adjunct Instructor. Many of his USD students now volunteer for JA! Abbas states, "My students learn the importance of giving back to their community and how they can have a positive impact on our future leaders."
