Downtown Street Improvement Program 
The Church Street improvement project started August 1 and will last eleven weeks, the City of Evanston will be contracting improvements on Church Street from Ridge Avenue to Chicago Avenue. The scope of work includes streetscape and street resurfacing work in this section of Church Street from Ridge Avenue to Chicago Avenue. The streetscape will be extended on Orrington Avenue from Church Street south to mid- block on the east side. For more information, click here.

Library Book Sale - Aug 10 - 12 
Hundreds of "gently-used" books that are no longer needed by the Evanston Public Library will be available for purchase at the library's annual summer sale, August 10-12. Proceeds go to help support library services and resources. Book sale hours on Friday, August 10, and Saturday, August 11, are from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. On Sunday, August 12, all remaining books, CDs, and DVDs, will be sold at half price, from noon until 5:30 p.m. The sale will be conducted on the third floor of the main library at 1703 Orrington Ave.

Escape the summer heat and spend your Friday night with Creative Coworking! This month, Creative Coworking's Art & Wine Night will feature new exhibits from local artists Ron Rutkowski and Bridgette Schnider and ongoing exhibits featuring various artwork. Drinks and appetizers will be served.
Meteor Shower Viewing - August 9 and August 11  Evanston residents will have a special opportunity to view the annual Perseid Meteor Shower of shooting stars at Lighthouse Beach (2611 Sheridan Road) on the evening of August 11th from 9pm - Midnight. The Evanston Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, in partnership with the Illinois Science Council, will extend access hours at Lighthouse Beach until midnight on Saturday, August 11th so people can use the lakefront to look for shooting stars. Participants need to remain on the beach. Illinois Science Council will present a free educational talk about meteor watching and meteorites on Thursday, August 9, 2012, at 7:00pm, at the Levy Center in Evanston at 300 Dodge Ave. Dr. Laura Trouille, astronomer from Northwestern University's Center for Interdisciplinary Exploration and Research in Astronomy (CIERA) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, will provide a lively talk on the Perseid meteor shower and, more generally, night-sky objects of interest. James Holstein of the Field Museum Department of Geology will discuss meteorites that come through the atmosphere and fall to earth and will bring samples people can view. Celtic Knot Public House Join Celtic Knot every Tuesday for a weekly non-traditional Irish music session with Gus and friends. Enjoy great food, drink and live music. As always, no cover! Evanston Art Center - August 12 The Evanston Art Center has just announced the forty-seven Illinois artists to be featured in the 21st Evanston and Vicinity Biennial! The Biennial opening event will take place Sunday, August 12th from 1PM to 4PM. The exhibition will be on view from August 12 to September 9, 2012. The Biennial is one of the Midwest's largest and most prestigious juried exhibitions. This year's juror is Shannon Stratton, the Founder and Creative Director of threewalls gallery in Chicago. Cash prizes and 3 solo shows will be awarded by the juror. Evanston Burger War 2012 Everyone loves burgers, but summertime seems to be peak burger weather, so what's your favorite yum on a bun? The Evanston Chamber of Commerce is giving you a chance to vote for your favorite beginning August 15. A number of Evanston restaurants have already 'enlisted' with more to come... Burgers will be judged on three categories: taste, creativity-ethnic focus, toppings, unusual ingredients (hence, chocolate) and presentation. Burger lovers are encouraged to suggest their favorite restaurant, be it Asian, Mexican or Indian..get in on the fun. Restaurants can create their own special 'burger' for the contest which will end September 16. Winners will be announced at the Third Annual "Mash-Up", the annual celebration of business, academia and the arts. Diners can vote on line at the Chamber site, www.evchamber.com or use their mobile devices. Voters are eligible for several restaurant prizes. Downtown Farmers Market - Every Saturday Through November Official hours of the Downtown Evanston Farmers Market are 7:30am to 1pm behind the Hilton Garden Inn. Shoppers can enjoy fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, cheese, milk, eggs, flavored oils, pasta, and bakery items, as well as flowers and plants. Free parking is available in the adjacent city parking garage at 1800 Maple Ave.
Taste of Armenia - August 26 at St. James Armenian Church - 816 Clark St. The Taste of Armenia serves up charcoal-grilled kebabs and homemade specialties! Few can resist the delicious pastries and steaming cups of coffee. The festival includes a full day of cultural offerings drawn from across the country, and local Armenian bands play music for line dancing all afternoon!
