City of Evanston CommUNITY Picnic - August 28
| What's more fun than gathering with your friends, family and fellow Evanstonians to enjoy an afternoon in the park with free food, games, activities and entertainment? The Jesse White Tumblers will perform as usual; new this year is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a youth entertainment stage. Evanston children will receive backpacks for school as supplies last. The annual CommUNITY Picnic will be held from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm on August 28th in Ingraham Park behind the Evanston Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.

|  Downtown Evanston is hosting a new event Saturday, September 17th, 2011. Center Stage in Downtown Evanston will be a musical block party for all ages. The event will be hosted from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm on Maple Avenue between Church Street and Clark Street. |

Evanston's Taste of Armenia Festival - August 28
|  Over the years, Evanston' s Taste of Armenia festival has become a favorite end-of-summer event for people of all ethnic backgrounds. The festival offers rousing music and delicious Armenian cooking. The festival provides a full day of cultural offerings drawn from across the country, highlighting ancient and modern aspects of the Armenian people. Prominent local Armenian bands play music for line dancing all afternoon, and there are plenty of games and activities for kids. The festivities run from 12 pm to 6:30 pm on Sunday, August 28, at 816 Clark St. in Evanston. For more information, call (847) 864-6263. |
| Paint Evanston Purple |

Northwestern University's Athletic Department and the City of Evanston are once again teaming up to Paint Evanston Purple! "Evanston Day" at Ryan Field is scheduled for Saturday, September 10, when the Wildcats meet Eastern Illinois in the home opener. In anticipation of the event, a pep rally encouraging the community to "Paint Evanston Purple," will be held Thursday, September 8, at Independence Park, from 6 pm to 7 pm. Once again, this year, Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and NU President Morton Schapiro will be joined by Director of Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips and Wildcat Head Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald in kicking off Wildcat season in Evanston with a fun and free Pep Rally!
Fans and residents attending the pep rally are encouraged to wear purple as select businesses will be offering promotions to individuals sporting the Northwestern-specific color. Northwestern t-shirts and Wildcat gear will be available for sale at a booth at the Pep Rally.

BackStage Evanston - September 18
|  Evanston's second annual performing arts festival will highlight 17 local performing arts organizations. The event will take place from 3:30 to 7:00 pm on Sun., Sept. 18, at Northwestern University's Ethel M. Barber Theater 30 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston. Presented by the City of Evanston's Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council, the event will feature five-minute performances by each organization. Participating groups are Actors Gymnasium, the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra, Evanston Dance Ensemble, Evanston Symphony Orchestra, Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre, The Lakeside Singers, Light Opera Works, Music Institute of Chicago, The Musical Offering, Next Theatre, North Shore Choral Society, Northwestern University Theatre Department, Piccolo Theatre, Piven Theatre Workshop, the Renovo String Orchestra, the Savoyaires, and Theatre Zarko. Admission is $20, and each ticketholder receives a $20 voucher redeemable for a special offer of equal value from any participating organization, making the cost of entry virtually free. |  Beginning August 22 the City of Evanston will be contracting pedestrian safety improvements over the next five weeks at the intersection of Emerson Street and Green Bay Road. The purpose of the project is to enhance pedestrian safety at the intersection. |
