Upcoming events at the Evanston History Center
|  Junior Curators, Wednesdays from January 19 - February 9, 3-5 p.m. Children grades 3-5 go behind the scenes of the EHC to learn how a museum operates and what people who work in a museum do. Along the way, participants learn how to use historical artifacts to construct knowledge about the past. The program culminates with participants working collaboratively with staff members and each other to curate their very own exhibit at the Evanston History Center. The cost of the program is $45/child. A limited amount of financial aid is available for families in need of assistance. The Evanston History Center Presents: Your House Has a History!
A House History Research Workshop Saturday, February 5, 2011 from 10 am-11:30 am
Learn how to uncover the history of your home in Evanston. You'll learn about resources available at EHC and even become a history detective yourself! Stephen - the first Writer-in-Residence at the Homestead - featuring new poetry and selections from his recently completed cultural history and memoir about the downtown New York poetry & arts scene in the 1960s. This 3-week series provides a thorough introduction to the basic breathing techniques and postures of Hatha Yoga. Nick presents the postures in a simple but thorough manner and suggests modifications for individual needs. Designing with pearls is a fascinating subject to most of our members. Pearl Society founder Eve Alfillé will share some of her approaches, and contrast them with those of some other designers who also seek out exotic pearls. In addition, this hands-on session will introduce some new techniques, such as 'caged pearls', that members may want to try. Materials and instruction will be available, but please reserve ahead as seating is limited. Refreshments will be served.

| CTA wants to hear from you! Public meeting, January 27, 6-8:30 p.m. | 
The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) is proposing to make improvements, subject to the availability of funding, to the North Red and Purple Lines. The improvements are proposed in order to bring the existing transit stations, track systems and structures into a state of good repair from the track structure immediately north of Belmont station to the Linden terminal (9.5 miles). This project is one part of CTA's effort to extend and enhance the entire Red Line.
Attend the public scoping meeting in Evanston on Thursday, January 27, 6-8:30 p.m., Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster St. Residents will learn more about the project and provide feedback on the proposed alternatives, the purpose and need for the project and the environmental and community impacts to be evaluated. The input will help define the environmental studies to be considered in the Tier 1 Draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Read More>

Evanston Symphony Orchestra's "Songs of Heaven," Sunday, January 30, 2:30 p.m.
|  The Evanston Symphony Orchestra celebrates the 150th birthday of Gustav Mahler with his nostalgically beautiful Fourth Symphony in the second concert in the ESO's 65th anniversary season. Michelle Areyzaga sings the soprano solo in its folksong finale depicting a child's view of heaven. Gwyneth Walker's song cycle, The Promised Land, which was composed for Ms. Areyzaga and the ESO, also concludes with a vision of heaven. The ESO is proud to present this exciting world premiere! Tea Service at Pensiero Ristorante extended through April by Popular Demand

While afternoon tea was originally planned as a holiday promotion, it has proven so popular at Pensiero Ristorante, the traditional tea service will continue throughout the Spring.
Pensiero Ristorante will offer a traditional Afternoon Tea service on the third Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon of the month in the Grand Parlor of the Margarita European Inn. Guests will enjoy finger sandwiches, scones, pastries, and - of course - tea, amidst the vintage charm of our Edwardian decor and a roaring fireplace. Historic cocktails and wine are available as well.
There are several seatings daily from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Each seating lasts approximately an hour and a half and reservations are recommended. Afternoon Tea is priced at $19 per person (not including tax and gratuity). To make reservations, please call Pensiero Ristorante at 847.475.7779.
