The Downtown Evanston Gift Card The perfect gift for...Teachers * Coaches * Family Friends * Employees Just in time for the holiday shopping season, Downtown Evanston will launch a gift card program on December 1. The Downtown Evanston gift card is a prepaid option which can be redeemed against dining, goods and services at over 100 participating downtown Evanston businesses.
Purchasers of the gift card will also receive a "Passport to Downtown Evanston" featuring valuable offers from businesses that welcome the gift card.
Beginning December 1 gift card may be purchased Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the Downtown Evanston office at 820 Davis St., suite 151; and Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at First Bank and Trust at 820 Church St. The card is available in denominations from $5 to $500 and can be purchased with Visa, MasterCard and Discover.

Downtown Evanston and Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl will cut a ribbon to celebrate the grand opening of Flee at 1104 Davis Street. The public is invited for cake and festivities to welcome this new business to the downtown.
"We opened our first store in Newton, MA in 2003, and it was successful beyond our dreams," says Flee owner Suzanne Robin. "We are thrilled to open our new shop in Evanston, and are looking forward to being a strong member of the community and to connecting with busy women on the fly.
Flee is a boutique brand specializing in products made of oilcloth - a lightweight, durable and water-repellent fabric most commonly known for vintage tablecloths. Throw Down Your Heart, Thursday, November 18 at 7 p.m.
| Who knew that the banjo has its origins in Africa? The award-winning music documentary Throw Down Your Heart follows American banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck on a journey to explore the little known African roots of the banjo.
Hosted by Evanston's non-profit Percolator Films, this event will also include a brief live performance by Chicago banjo musician Pete Smith. Throw Down Your Heart will play at the Evanston Arts Depot, 600 Main Street, Evanston (the theater is located in the station house of the Metra train station). Admission is $8.00. | Evanston Holiday Tree Lighting, Tuesday, November 23 at 5:30 p.m. | You are invited to gather to welcome the upcoming holiday season with the annual Evanston Holiday Tree Lighting in Fountain Square. The celebration includes a visit from Evanston Mayor Tisdahl, Rotary International's Associate General Secretary Kathy Kessenich and Santa Claus who arrive at Fountain Square on an Evanston fire truck.
Immediately following the ceremony is a festive warm-up reception with holiday goodies hosted by Rotary International in their Café International at One Rotary Center, at 1560 Sherman Avenue, across from Fountain Square.
In the spirit of holiday giving, warm essentials (socks, long underwear, gloves, hats, etc.) will be accepted at the warm-up reception for donation to Hilda's Place, Evanston's emergency housing and support services for the homeless. Hilda's provides more than 12,600 nights of shelter and serves 20,000 meals per year to those in need.Downtown Evanston will continue the tradition of the "green" tree lighting ceremony with thousands of reusable LED lights decorating the majestic tree. |

Evanston History Center's Annual Holiday Open House, December 12 from 1-4 p.m.

You are invited to celebrate the holidays with the Evanston History Center at 222 Greenwood Street. Enjoy live classical music, kids' crafts, a performance by musicians Marian McNair and Jim Kendros, light refreshments, and the Dawes House dressed up for the holidays, and, new this year, a holiday wreath sale. This event is free and open to the public.
They will also be accepting donations for their 5th Annual Food Drive during the Holiday Open House. Donations of non-perishable, nutritious food (no glass, please) will be collected at the Dawes House from Thursday, December 9, 2010 through Sunday, December 12, 2010, from 1-4 p.m. each day. All donations benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository and will benefit local area resident
