Evanston Annual Holiday Tree Lighting
Tuesday, November 23, 5:30pm
Fountain Square

You are invited to gather to welcome the upcoming holiday season with the annual Evanston Holiday Tree Lighting in Fountain Square. The celebration includes a visit from Evanston Mayor Tisdahl, Rotary International's Associate General Secretary Kathy Kessenich and Santa Claus who arrive at Fountain Square on an Evanston fire truck.

Immediately following the ceremony is a festive warm-up reception with holiday goodies hosted by Rotary International in their Café International at One Rotary Center, at 1560 Sherman Avenue, across from Fountain Square.
Connections for the Homeless

In the spirit of holiday giving, warm essentials (socks, long underwear, gloves, hats, etc.) will be accepted at the warm-up reception for donation to Hilda's Place, Evanston's emergency housing and support services for the homeless. Hilda's provides more than 12,600 nights of shelter and serves 20,000 meals per year to those in need.

Downtown Evanston will continue the tradition of the "green" tree lighting ceremony with thousands of reusable LED lights decorating the majestic tree.

Pedestrian Law changed to ensure safety
of Pedestrians in Crosswalk

The City of Evanston has had a tradition of being a leader in the area of traffic safety. In the recent past, the Illinois State Legislature passed a change in the Rules of the Road as it pertains to pedestrians in crosswalks, under Illinois Vehicle Code Section 625 ILCS 11-1002.

The previous wording in the law stated that a driver of the vehicle could slow down or stop, if need be, to yield for a pedestrian in the crosswalk. The wording of the law now is specific and states that "a driver shall stop and yield the right of way to a pedestrian crossing the road way, within a crosswalk, when the pedestrian is upon the half of the roadway that the vehicle is traveling, or is approaching so closely from the opposite half of the roadway as to be in danger."
