Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In support of National Breast Cancer Awareness month, Pensiero Ristorante is featuring a collection of Historic Cocktails inspired by, named for, or created by famous women.  

During the entire month of October, $1 from each cocktail ordered from this list, will be given to Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly Y-ME) in honor of two women, Susan Rosenberg, Melissa Pure's best friend who lost her battle with this disease and Loraine Pure, Margarita Inn Owner Michael Pure's mother, who is alive today because of new treatments being funded everyday by people just like you.

Pensiero Ristorante will host a kick-off party, Friday, October 1st from 5pm to 8pm in the Grand Parlor of the Margarita European Inn with complimentary appetizers. Gather your friends, collegues and family members, order a cocktail or two, and toast to the fabulous women in your lives. Remember you have an entire month to help make a difference!

Join Mayor Tisdahl and the City of Evanston on Sunday, October 3, 2010 for the Annual Bike the Ridge ride! Ridge Avenue between Howard and Church will be closed to ALL vehicular traffic.

Bikes are not allowed on Ridge Avenue at any other time, so come out and enjoy this non-competitive, City-sponsored special event!


The ride will take place between 9:00 a.m. and Noon. However, Ridge Avenue will be closed to ALL vehicular traffic from Howard to Church Streets from one hour before the ride until one hour after the ride's end (closed 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)  Read more about the day's activities!

Celebrating Arts & Humanities Month

Art Under Glass, the program that showcases local artists in unoccupied storefront windows, will introduce new artists to the windows at 500 Davis St. and in the 1600 block of Orrington.

Artists include: Jyl Bonaguro, Marcy Brower, Calaj, Leslie and Laura Hirshfield,  Michelle Korte LecciaGregory Page, Greg Slocum, Cornelia Maude Spelman, and Jack Weiss.
   
A reception introducing the artists and their work will be held at 5:00 PM in the 500 Davis St. lobby.  After we welcome attendees, the artists will offer a short tour of the windows featuring their work. The tour will then continue to the 1600 block of Orrington, where additional windows feature other artists.
   
Created by the Arts & Business Committee of the Evanston Arts Council last year, Art Under Glass is now in its fifh cycle, bringing life and energy to downtown Evanston streets by placing the work of local artists in empty retail spaces.  The first three cycles were a joint project between the Arts & Business Committee, Downtown Evanston, and Farnsworth-Hill, Inc., which manages the 708 Church St. building, where art has been featured in windows on Church St. and Orrington.

CARROTMOB is a network of consumers who buy products in order to reward businesses who are making the most socially responsible decisions.

Citizens' Greener Evanston (CGE) with assistance from  Northwestern University's GREEN House (Group Residence for Environmental Engagement at Northwestern) and the Business Alliance for a Sustainable Evanston is organizing a pilot Carrotmob for Evanston that will take place at Lemoi Ace Hardware, 1008 Davis St, on October 9th, 2010.

Lemoi has committed to use 50% of the extra revenue to finance building energy efficiency upgrades. In addition to Lemoi's discounts on energy-saving products, neighboring Davis Street retailers are also offering their own incentives. Lemoi customers will receive coupons to Gigio's Pizzeria, Frida Hair Studio and My Panini when checking out.

Chgo Phil TrevinoRachmaninov's Second Symphony will kick off the Chicago Philharmonic's 21st season on Sunday October 10 at 7 p.m. as part of the evening's Rachmaninov Russian Feast. New conducting sensation Robert Trevino will lead the orchestra as it returns to Pick-Staiger Hall on Northwestern University's Campus in Evanston after a successful 20th anniversary season.  

Trevino, a rising star in the conducting arena,recently was a prize winner in the Sir Georg Solti Emerging Conductor Award for 2010. The award, presented by the Solti Foundation, was introduced in 2010 to give American conductors major recognition in the formative years of their career.  Award-winning pianist, Julia Siciliano will perform on of Rachmaninov's most popular pieces, Second Piano Concerto.

Snapshot Evanston

The Evanston Community Foundation's Leadership Evanston Program is offering a one-day "snapshot" orientation to the community. Snapshot Evanston is designed to give local residents and Evanston-based employees a broader knowledge of the community and its issues.

By the end of the exciting day, participants have a first hand picture of how Evanston works and its strengths and challenges. The program includes an overview of Evanston history, a bus tour highlighting important trends and developments, and panel discussion with distinguished Evanston leaders.


Evanston Symphony Orchestra
The Evanston Symphony Orchestra's 65th anniversary season is one to celebrate. In addition to our fabulous opening concert, enjoy Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the North Shore Choral Society and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with Music Director, Maestro Lawrence Eckerling, conducting and playing the piano solo.
