Recovery From a Critical Incident

What should you do in the recovery stages?
Now that the emergency crews are gone and the dust has settled, what steps will you take to move your business toward recovery? This final stage of dealing with critical incidents is the most variable in terms of approach and duration for all businesses. For every company and employee, recovery requires time, the ability to grieve, and the ability to find closure from the event.
In last month's newsletter we looked at Response and the various interventions that could be implemented following a workplace critical incident. A customized Critical Incident Response strategy is an element of recovery that facilitates the ability to grieve and to find closure. Numerous group and individual approaches are available and it is important for your company to ensure that the right level of trauma professionals are on hand to help you move through the crisis.
Some aspects of recovery that are often not considered: 1) Management has to be prepared that they, too, might be affected by the event. 2) People recover at different rates. 3) The effects of cumulative trauma and stress can operate at both the group and individual levels.
Ensuring an effective recovery involves post evaluation and recovery assessment. Many crisis responders attend to the immediate aftermath of a critical incident without responsible follow up. This omission can be played out weeks, months, even years after the event. Anniversary reactions, for example, can trigger traumatic reminders of the event. Training your workforce and educating them about trauma and post-traumatic stress can alert them to these variables and minimize psychological damage. At Trauma Outreach Associates follow up is an essential component of a comprehensive recovery.
With the correct resources, support and patience, your company will be able to return to its normal, pre-incident state quickly and efficiently. With appropriate closure, the traumatic event is incorporated into the historical narrative of the business - but the long term damaging impact of the event is mitigated.
