REVIEW OF THE BENEFITS OF VITAMIN D AT OPTIMUM LEVELS

When reviewing the Shaklee Health Sciences Bulletins regarding Vitamin D from 2007, 2008, 2009 we find more and more published studies which are pointing to vitamin D as protecting health in a variety of different and important ways when taken at optimum levels.  Below are some of the key benefits:

*Vitamin D helps promote bone mineralization (stronger bones)

*lower chance of bone fractures

*stronger muscle function and less risk of falling in seniors

*less periodontal disease-the leading cause of tooth loss as we age

*men with the highest level of vitamin D had significantly lower overall risk (45%) of prostate cancer

*women with the highest blood levels of vitamin D had the lowest risk of breast cancer

*Vitamin D has emerged as a protective factor against colon cancer

*lower risk for cardiovascular disease

*increased HDL (good) cholesterol levels

*lower risk for diabetes

*decreased risk of metabolic syndrome

*decreased waist circumference
Vitamin D Update:  Another Benefit for Seniors

Last month we reported that Shaklee presented breaking research that suggested the important role of vitamin D nutrition for maintaining cardiovascular health.

Now news comes from a research review published online in BMJ, formerly called the British Medical Journal that taking vitamin D supplements at a dose of 700-1,000 international units per day, may make falling 19% less likely for people aged 65 and older.

The review is based on eight studies of people aged 65 and older who took vitamin D supplements or placebos.  Doses of vitamin D differed among the studies.  Participants lived in nursing homes or in their own homes.

The reduction in fall risk was only seen in people who took at least 700 international units (IU) per day of vitamin D. Taking smaller doses didn't appear to help.  Read the research here.

How Do You Achieve Optimum Vitamin D Status?

The findings of such studies really do highlight the importance of achieving optimum vitamin D status.  Eating a healthy diet including foods fortified with vitamin D, like reduced fat milk or soy milk is certainly a good place to start.  However keep in mind that many dairy products made from milk (e.g. cheese, reduced fat ice cream) are not typically fortified with vitamin D and contain only small amounts.  Some ready to eat cereals may be fortified but only a few commonly eaten foods are good sources of vitamin D, like cooked salmon, mackerel and tuna.

Sun exposure for about 10 to 15 minutes at least two times a week can help, but remember sunscreen use which helps reduce the risk of skin cancer, actually blocks vitamin D synthesis in the skin.  And if you plan on being out in the sun, make sure you avoid the most dangerous time of the day, between the hours of 10 am to 2 pm.

And of course, one of the safest and most convenient ways to get adequate amounts of vitamin D is to take a multivitamin/mineral supplement and/or a calcium supplement with added vitamin D.  Based on the latest nutrition research findings, Shaklee scientists have now enhanced Vitalizer and Vita-Lea with higher levels of vitamin D3.  And have done so at no additional cost to you!

Higher levels of Vitamin D3 are clinically supported and proven to significantly raise vitamin D levels in the blood. Not only is vitamin D essential for strong bones, cutting edge research findings link higher vitamin D levels to bone and heart health, immune and cognitive function, as well as the retention of normal blood sugar and blood pressure levels.  And now you have these optimal levels of Vitamin D in all Vitalizer and Vita-Lea versions.
