Greetings!
October sees the beginning of Cold and Flu Season, and also brings continuing concerns regarding the Swine Flu and a global epidemic. So this week we highlight the difference between prevention and treatment with a comparison between the drug Tamiflu vs. Shaklee's NutriFeron. Also we will share some tips from Dr. Richard Brouse on Immune Challenge Time for Children.
Later this month we also look at the real reason why it's so important to eat your daily servings of fruits and veggies, and why even that may not be enough nutrition to keep you healthy today. And we'll have another exciting update on Vitamin-D that benefits Seniors and we will share yet another amazing, life-changing Vivix testimonial for you.
These are some of the subjects we will be sharing with you over the next few weeks. And if you missed any of our recent newsletters please visit our Newsletter Archive!

Protecting Yourself from Swine Flu A Comparison: Prevention vs Treatment
The difference between prevention and treatment can be seen when we look at the two approaches to dealing with Swine Flu. On one side, we have Shaklee's NutriFeron immune booster, and on the other side, the prescription drug Tamiflu. Let's compare:
Tamiflu is available only by prescription after a visit with your doctor. If you got sick with a 101-degree temperature, and it's within 48 hours of the onset of illness, you'd be a good candidate to receive it. However Tamiflu is only effective against influenza virus types A & B and although it will probably work to treat flu caused by the H1N1 (Swine Flu) virus, additional studies still need to be done to prove its effectiveness according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Also, the safety and efficacy of repeated courses of treatment have not been established.
The main known side effects of Tamiflu include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bronchitis, stomach pain, dizziness, and headache. (FDA says this is not a complete list.)
And then there is the natural alternative-Shaklee's Nutriferon, a non-prescription, immune boosting supplement. It's a patented, clinically proven blend of immune strengthening natural plant extracts that has been found to protect human lung tissue from viral infection by activating Natural Killer Cells, which are specific white blood cells that target cells infected by pathogens like viruses.
Nutriferon is safe for anyone to take and you can take it NOW, not after you get sick! Taken daily NutriFeron strengthens the immune response by boosting the body's natural interferon. NutriFeron has no side effects and its formula has been proven effective by four published human clinical studies with a fifth study on the way. It is proven effective against Hepatitis C virus, colds and flu viruses, allergy symptoms, with the "side benefits" of helping lessen PMS symptoms, menopause and more.
Tamiflu costs $79 (US) for ten capsules, AFTER you pay the $50-$150 for a doctor visit (US). NutriFeron costs $39/month ($45.95 Canadian/month) at Member price (MN), with an additional 10% off that price (MN) if you add NutriFeron as part of an AutoShip order.

NutriFeron is a key part of strengthening your immune system and helping to prevent flu's like Swine Flu, there are other preventive actions you can take. Here are the CDC's tips for reducing swine flu infection:
*Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze. Use a tissue or your arm-not your hands.
*Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. (Ed. Note: Frequent hand washing can dry out your skin -especially in the colder months. Shaklee Hand Wash Concentrate will help keep your hands moisturized.)
*Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.
*Try to avoid close contact with sick people. (Ed. Note: Keeping a canister of Shaklee's Germ Off Disinfecting Wipes handy is a smart way to be able to disinfect things people touch, like shopping carts.)
*Stay home if you are sick until at least 24 hours after you have been free of fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or more, or signs of fever, without using fever-reducing medicines.

Immune Challenge Time for Children
The following is from Dr. Richard Brouse. Dr. Brouse is a chiropractor and nutritionist, and the founder of Health Education Corp. and the Northwest Academy of Practical Nutrition. He has been creating and distributing educational materials on health topics since 1983. He practices in Clackamas, OR at the Sunnyside Health Center and Chiropractic Clinic, P.C.
Going back or starting school increases exposure to new viruses which challenge immune coping skills. With the development of Shaklee's new Incredivites, children's immune enhancing multiple vitamin-mineral supplement, now is the time to prepare for the flu and cold season. Each Incredivites tablet contains 25 mg of lactoferrin. It is also present in healthy white blood cells and secreted by some pancreatic cells. Lactoferrin can be purified from milk or produced recombinantly. It is a globular multifunctional protein with antimicrobial activity (bactericide, fungicide) and is part of the innate defense, mainly at mucous membranes. Human colostrum has the highest concentration with human milk coming in a distant second. Cow's milk has much lower lactoferrin content than human milk. Of course children over 12 (puberty) can benefit fully from taking Nutriferon on a daily basis.
Don't forget to: * get adequate sleep * eat a nutritious breakfast * wash hands 4 or more times per day
A statement originating from the Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta 5/9/09 says that "..swine flu, H1N1, is with us to stay." One way to minimize the spread through schools and prevent school closures is to have teachers and students wash their hands before meals and after recess. This has proven in states such as Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota to be as or more effective than vaccination alone.
At the first sign of a pending viral infection, cold or flu, children (and adults) can chew, suck or swallow 1 - 3 Defend & Resist every 3 hours until all symptoms cease.
