World Digestive Health Day - May 29

About 1.5 million children die

from diarrhea annually

Focus on Preventing and Managing Diarrheal Disease

Each year, 4.5 billion people around the world contract diarrhea. Nearly one in five child deaths - about 1.5 million each year - is due to this disease. Today, only 39 per cent of children with diarrhea in developing countries receive the recommended treatment.

Infections of the intestines, however, are not only occurring only in developing countries.  In Canada, 86% of acute gastrointestinal illnesses involve diarrhea and approximately 25% of people taking antibiotic medicines develop diarrhea.

Fluid and electrolytes that help our bodies function are lost when we have diarrhea. These need to be replaced quickly. In most cases of diarrhea, replacing lost fluid to prevent dehydration is the only treatment necessary. It is important to note that an individual who has diarrhea for several day or develops a new onset of diarrhea, fever or severe abdominal pain, should see a doctor.

Diarrhea in children can be very dangerous. A child can die from dehydration within a few days so when a child has diarrhea for more than a day medical attention should be sought.

The objective of the WDHD 2011 is to focus attention on the prevention and management of diarrheal diseases to improve child survival in developing countries as well as to reduce morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world with special attention given to at risk travelers.

Celiac disease is a medical condition in which the absorptive surface of the small intestine is damaged by a substance called gluten. This results in an inability of the body to absorb nutrients: protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, which are necessary for good health.

The Canadian Celiac Association has local chapters, recommendations on celiac-related books, lists of gluten-free foods and recipes, information for the extra cost of gluten-free food from Revenue Canada, local chapters, and much moreGet familiar with CCA today
