Supporting Research to Save Lives from Colon Cancer Colon Cancer Family

Approximately 22,000 Canadians develop colorectal cancer this year. Nearly all  9,000 will die. This is tragic when we consider that colon cancer is essentially preventable.

Evidence suggests that obesity is a risk factor for developing this too often fatal cancer. Recent evidence suggests that for every 5 unit increase in body mass index (BMI), the risk of colorectal cancer increases by approximately 10% in females and a 24% in males.

Dr. Theodore Shapero, the first recipient of the Canadian Digestive Health Foundation's Community Research Grant, has designed a study to observe how rates of colorectal cancer and colonic polyps are related to obesity.  Dr. Shapero hopes to also be able to analyze whether place of birth and length of residence in Canada are additional risk factors. The Canadian Digestive Health Foundation hopes that conclusions drawn from Dr. Shapero's study will help save lives in Canada.
