Heartburn Can Be Fatal
 Brian Savage speaking to CDDW
Former Montreal Canadian Brian Savage, had never heard of esophageal cancer until his brother Mike was diagnosed with the disease.  Mike died 9 months later.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is defined as a cancer that forms in tissues lining the esophagus (the muscular tube through which food passes from the throat to the stomach).  It is estimated that there are 1,500 new cases of esophageal cancer diagnosed in Canada each year.

While early esophageal cancer does not cause symptoms, latter symptoms can include difficult or painful swallowing, severe weight loss, pain in the throat or back, behind the breastbone or between the shoulder blades, hoarseness or chronic cough, vomiting and coughing up blood.

People who suffer from GERD (gastroesophogeal reflux disorder) may be more at risk of developing EC.  If you have concerns about your health, you should always consult your doctor. If you think you may have EC, speak to your doctor and ask about being scoped.

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease -- GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a disorder affecting the valve between the esophagus (swallowing tube) and the stomach. Most patients suffer from heartburn, food or acid reflux (regurgitation) or indigestion. Reflux refers to a reverse flow of the stomach's contents into the esophagus. This can lead to injury to the lining of the lower esophagus.
