A Story

Yankee Derek Jeter recently hit a home run to reach a coveted but rare milestone in Major League Baseball -- 3,000 hits. Jeter has a reputation for reaching his goals by staying focused on one thing: what will give his team a win. He focuses on the game and then pursues an individual performance to support that team strategy.

Television coverage of the event revealed a deeper lesson for those of us who lead and mentor others. When the reporter interviewed Derek's father, who had been watching in the stands, Dr. Charles Jeter had this to say:

"First of all we need a victory. It was just tremendous. I really can't describe how I was feeling. He hits a home run on the 3,000th hit. I can't describe it. Very emotional. Very happy for him." (YES Network interview with Kim Jones)

The son is up to bat with 2,999 hits and what the father was thinking about first was the game.

Reflect:

  • What is "the game" for your organization? How do you define success? What is your strategy for getting there?

  • What can you do to help individual contributors understand the relationship between what they do and the larger game?

  • How can you help those you lead and mentor to see every action they take in light of larger marketplace and workplace dynamics?

  • How does the game you are playing fit into the Big Game? How is the organizational vision aligned with a compelling moral purpose?

Take Action:

Spend some time with your team this week to explore the relationship between individual performance and the organization's purpose and business plan.
