How the Brain Works

Every adult brain has a unique neuronal/signalling network in place already, a combination of genes, culture, childhood environment, and prior experience.   Therefore, all adult learning starts with prior learning. Neurons that have "fired together" in the past are more likely to want to fire together again. When you are asking people to change, you are asking them to grow additional dendrites and change the very structure of their brains. While some people "love" change, most adults resist change for biological reasons -- the brain is hard-wired to filter out disruptions to its efficient, energy-conserving habits.

Reflection

How can you tailor your message so that it connects to what is already stored in the other person's brain?

How can you overcome the brain's natural tendency to filter out what it has never experienced before?

How can you work with the brains of others instead of increasing resistance with negative judgments and emotional reactions?

Take Action

Make a conscious effort to become more "audience-centric" in your communication. Content-centric messages may be filtered out by another's brain before they can be consciously processed. What motivates you may not be the same as for others. Ask yourself this question before you speak, "How can I connect this message and its importance to the current reality of the other person?"
