FEATURED ACTIVITY OF THE MONTH - EAGLE PRESERVE TOURS
Several tour operators in Haines include opportunities for visiting the Chilkat Valley Bald Eagle Preserve, but only a few solely feature and/or are located in the Eagle Preserve:

River Adventures Jet Boat Tour - StepanskyChilkat River Adventures

Allows guests to enjoy a scenic tour in to the remote areas of the Eagle Preserve accessible only by jet boat.

Bart Henderson/Chilkat Guides - Float CampEagle Preserve Floats

Provides guided float trips through the Eagle Preserve or multi-day river expeditions on the Tatshenshini and Alsek rivers.

Not a zoo but an animal wildlife center of live animals all indigenous to the region located a few miles off the Haines Highway on Mosquito Lake Road. Great photo opportunities of Alaska animals in their natural settings (tours by appointment only) as you learn about the unique characteristics of each member of Kroschel's 'family.'

Offers tours of the Chilkat Native Village of Klukwan for the experience of the authentic Tlingit cultures. (Coming in July is also the Klukwan Tribal Tour of the new Heritage Center facilities - check back with the Visitor Center for more information.)

Eagle Preserve Council Ground - StepanskyThe Haines Highway, a newly designated National Scenic Byway traverses through the Eagle Preserve from Haines to the US/Canadian Border. Several pull outs and walkways with interpretive panels make this a great way to explore the area on your own especially if you make time to stop at 33 Mile Roadhouse for a famous 33 Mile burger!

DESTINATION HAINES - FOR A CAUSE

Alaska Mountain Guides - KayakingBicyclist Bruce Martin is currently on a solo journey from Las Vegas to Haines. An avid supporter of BikeMS over the years, this 7,650 mile ride is to raise awareness of the complicated disease of Multiple Sclerosis. To learn more about Bruce and this special adventure and to track his progress, visit the Biking Las Vegas web site. If all goes according to schedule, we anticipate the arrival of Bruce Martin in Haines about August 16.

Also currently making their way to Haines is Katey and Doug Clautice. They began a 1,300 mile journey in May paddling their way to Haines in kayaks from Seattle, Washington. Their 3 - 4 month trip is to raise awareness and donations for the non-profit organization Interplast which provides free reconstructive plastic surgery for the poor in developing countries (treating children and adults with clefts and disabling burns). Since the Clautice's journey deals with coastal weather and the temper of the ocean, their arrival date in Haines is unknown. We'll keep tabs on their progress and announce a projected arrival date when made available. Katey and Doug's travels can be tracked on their blog Kayaking For A Cause.
CRUISE SHIP SEASON
Statendam in Portage Cove - Stepansky

Volunteers are needed:

Volunteers are needed to drive the Peoplemover Cart on cruise ship days, especially beginning in July. Please contact Angie Robinson at the Visitor Center for scheduling if you are interested or know of someone who may like to spend just a few hours welcoming our cruise ship guests to town. 907-766-2234

The first cruise ship calls of the season have been extremely successful, especially with the Ryndam hosting the annual Haines High School Senior Luncheon. Approximately 20 students and 5 chaperones attended the event which included a ship tour. Many thanks to Holland America for once again providing this unique experience for our seniors!

Stop by the Visitor Center for a copy of the 2010 Haines Cruise Ship Calendar or view the current schedule on the cruise page of our web site. Visit the CLAA web site for other port calendars. Please check back often for changes to the schedules.
