| CONFERENCES & TRADE SHOWS | | |
Haines will be host to two special conferences this year. The Women's Club will be holding their spring meeting the weekend of May 28. We understand there will be about 50 to 60 members attending this meeting.
The other conference coming to town is the Emblem Club Convention. Information is forthcoming, but it is to be held towards the end of September. We will keep you posted about the details of this meeting when they are made available.
Tourism Director, Lori Stepansky, had a busy month of travel in March as she attended four conferences and trade shows:
Seattle Bike Expo: Attended on behalf of Haines and as president of SATC (Southeast Alaska Tourism Council), we booth-shared with Alaska Marine Highway. About 12,000 bike enthusiasts attended the show to learn more about product and destinations for riding their bikes.
SeaTrade/Cruise Shipping Convention: Haines was able to participate by booth sharing with Alaska ACT and Office of Economic Development. This is a huge trade show and the first time Alaska had a presence there with a booth at the trade show and 30 delegates from Alaska. Stepansky attended many of the conference sessions. The talk of the conference/convention was the attendance of Alaska's Governor Sean Parnell as this is the first time a governor or any such government official had attended the convention. Governor Parnell met with cruise line executives and visited with the Alaska delegates and media persons at the Alaska booth. Proposed legislation is still pending but we are all hopeful for a great outcome.
Side note : Manager of Trade Development for Port Metro Vancouver, Greg Wirtz, still basking in the glow of the Canadian hockey team 2010 Olympic victory couldn't help but sport his country's team jersey during the Alaska Panel session. Congrats to Canada on a great Olympic game!
WACVB Tourism Tech Summit: Social media is growing and changing as are the tools for visitor services and promotional opportunities. This event helps attendees dig deeper in to the social media arena to learn how to be effective with marketing and learning more about how to analyze data of the efforts. Stepansky gathered ideas soon to be implemented on our own Facebook and Twitter accounts.
ATIA Marketing Meetings: The annual spring ATIA meetings were held in Juneau the end of March. Research data was provided for last year's visitor statistics as well as forecasts for this season. Times are tough but foreign markets for Alaska are looking good and studies show potential Alaska visitors are booking their trips in a shorter time frame verses planning out several months in advance. Also, data indicated people like those vacation planners in-hand as much as the web sites. |

Representatives from Skagway, Haines, Wrangell, Ketchikan, Sitka, Juneau, Whitehorse, and the AMHS participated in the meetings. |
