"En - A Connection with Japan"
 Betty Reynolds

August 11 - September 6
Reception: Saturday, August, 11, 4-6pm

Betty Reynolds-Tsukubai

Author/artist, Betty Reynolds and her husband relocated to Japan in 1993. Tokyo would become her home for the next seven years and she felt driven to record all the  images she saw around her in sketchbook after sketchbook.

Succumbing to a fascination with the unknown and wonderful new world she found herself in, the author/artist simply painted what she saw and gleefully pondered its significance. Unwilling to let Japan's mysteries elude her, Betty Reynolds ferreted out the true meaning of the odd entities and events happening around her-whether at festivals or flea markets, in vending machines or on supermarket shelves-and presents the fruits of her labors in brilliant water colors.
Ultimately those sketchbooks were turned into paintings and five illustrated books on Japan.

Betty Reynolds presents her most recent work.

If you are interested, please e-mail NihonmachiNite@scidpda.org for registration details.

5:00 PM- The Kimochi Band is comprised of 25 seniors ages 62 to 94 years! They are a relatively new band of ukulele students who want to continue playing, develop their skills and have fun.  Fun fact: the Kimochi Band loves to wear colorful Hawai'ian attire.  They cannot wait to perform for you at Nihonmachi Nite this year!

6:00 PM- One World Taiko joins us for a second year, performing as a Japanese drum ensemble that incorporates dynamic movement, lyrical melodies and rhythmic grooves with heart pounding percussion. Japantown is looking forward to their lively performance!

6:45 PM- Cascade Kendo Kai welcomes you, your friends and family to experience the traditions of Kendo.  Four generations of Kendo have been transmitted through Cascade Kendo Kai, and we are honored to have them back for a second year at Nihonmachi Nite.

7:30 PM- Shun Endo of The Liquid Now, singer/songwriter, will be performing original pieces and Japanese songs on guitar.  He brings to the stage an upbeat and pop-y set, with a few mellow tunes. "I just want to have fun, and entertain the listeners as best as I can with some upbeat tunes and a little humor". We're excited to have Shun join us at his first Nihonmachi Nite event!

8:00 PM- The night will close out with J-Pop! Come out with your Anime costumes and join us for a dance party on the the main stage with DJ Yu, a Japan native who wants to see everyone out on the dance floor!
