Pottery Northwest was established in the mid sixties but the formal
artist-in-residence program is five years young. In that time people have applied from across the country to come to Seattle and participate in the studio community.

Often the residents are recent graduates of MFA programs, but just as often they have arrived in the ceramic field through force of will and perseverance.

The current group of residents reflects that same diversity in their work which is architectural, figurative and vessel oriented, and constructed or fired with a similar variety of methods. The showing at KOBO will reflect the breadth and depth of the studio program at Pottery Northwest which is also indicative of the contemporary ceramic field in the US today.

"Art by Attrition" curated by Julia Harrison

Subtractive processes have a particular dynamic.  When using these techniques, all of the material that an artist will have to work with is present from the beginning and, once removed, cannot be replaced.  This exhibition will call attention to this unseen tension by including images or examples of raw materials or works in progress.
