KOROMO - 衣 -
By Yuri Kinoshita
Saturday, September 10th - 24, 2010

Yuri Kinoshita is a lighting designer from Kyoto,Japan who moved to Seattle in 2008.   For more than 10 years, before settling in Seattle, she has been interested in multi-cultures and native costumes, researching dyeing and textiles of Asia, Europe, Africa and India.  This has lead to designing and making interior accessories and lighting for the home.

Yuri in her own words, "I was a rotten second daughter of a kimono fabric dealer . As a reaction to growing up with rolls of Kimono fabrics around me, I hated Kimono, tradition and ordinary Japanese convention.  From a very young age, I was very interested in design and creating new things that had never been produced before.  Now life comes full circle as I find myself incorporating the very thing that my life was surrounded by and use the kimono as a foundation for some of my best inspiration."

"At KOBO Gallery, we present "Koromo", the meaning which is something like being  draped in a robe, featuring the "Kimono" .   I will dress eight mannequins with a unique combination of Kimono, Obi, Obi-age and Obi-shime, that are made from textiles from around the world. I am also introducing a new series of lighting, using Kimono textiles. "

 Goods From the Hoods
Salvaged from houses built in the early 1900's, the old growth fir had already been here for hundreds of years when it was harvested to build Seattle.  Buying one of these  serving boards, butcher blocks or trays is connecting us to Seattle history and in a way, preserving some of the last remnants of the magnificent forests that once covered the great Northwest.

Each piece is stamped with the name of the neighborhood and age of the house it came from.  Goods from the Hoods only uses eco-friendly, non-toxic and food safe finishes.  Available at KOBO Capitol Hill and KOBO at Higo.
