Shodo Harada Roshi is a Zen Master in the Rinsai tradition. He trained with Zen Master and Calligrapher Yamada Mumon Roshi. For the past 25 years he has served as the Abbot of Sogenji, a Rinsai Zen Monastery in Okayama, Japan, and he is also the Abbot of Tahoma-Sogenji Monastery on Whidbey Island.
Calligraphy has a long and rich history within Japan as an art form and a Zen teaching device. Its emphasis on immediate, unhesitating, and spontaneous expression. Chinese characters, which comprise the written language of Japan, are painted with black ink on white paper or silk, often in the form of scrolls. Phrases on the scrolls most often represent familiar sayings or poems from Zen wisdom or Japanese literature. Shodo Harada Roshi's work will be available for sale, with proceeds benefiting Tahoma-Sogenji One Drop Zen Monastery. www.onedropzendo.org.
