LILITH ROCKETT
Lilith Rockett, a studio potter residing in Portland, Oregon, works primarily in porcelain. Her work, created by hand on the potter's wheel, reveals a deep interest in the subtle qualities of the material: translucency, fluidity, density, and the velvety softness of an unglazed polished surface. Minimal in both form and surface, her work calls attention to subtle nuances of line or shadow, with a delight in the quiet imperfections that characterize the handmade.

With clean lines and unadorned surfaces, Rockett's forms are grouped in social arrangements. The groupings, still lifes, using both containers and pedestals, endeavor to create a ceremonial tone. As sculptural objects, the simple shapes are intended to evoke rather than impose: archetypal forms exploring ideas of balance, cohesion, tension and celebration, leaving an open-ended impression suggesting the beginning of a conversation. The conversation continues as the objects gain purpose in use. All of the work actually is intended for use in a domestic setting.  Rockett believes that interacting intimately with handmade objects enhances our feeling of connectedness and enriches our daily life.

ANI KASTEN
Ani Kastan is a ceramic sculptor from Oakland, California. Last year she was an Artist-in-Residence at the Red Dirt Studio in Maryland where she now lives and has established her studio.  Kasten's education includes a ceramics apprenticeship with Santa Kumar Prajapati, Master Potter, Thimi Ceramics in Thimi, Nepal and a ceramics apprenticeship with Rupert Spira, Master Potter, Church Farm Pottery in Shropshire, England. Kasten has exhibited her work nationally. The potter's wheel is the foundation for her work. Her wheel thrown vessels are textured sculptural forms made from clay in its most natural state. The aesthetic of her work is both minimal and modern.

Todd Shimoda Book Reading
Also featuring artwork by Linda Shimoda
Thursday, June 25, 2009, 6:00AM-8:00PM

Meet Todd Shimoda, who will be reading from his new novel released last month entitled,  "Oh!"  with artwork by Linda Shimoda.  This ambitious book combines art and fiction in a way rarely seen, with art actually weaving its way into the plot and into the reader's understanding of the obscure Japanese concept of mono no aware, or the beautiful sadness in things.  Linda Shimoda will be attending this event and exhibiting her artwork for one evening only.

NPR features "Oh! A mystery of mono no aware" in Independent Booksellers Pick Summer's Best Reads
Lucia Silva, book buyer at Portrait of a Bookstore in Studio City, CA chose "Oh! A mystery of mono no aware" as an NPR summer reading pick. She's an enthusiastic fan of the novel and its publisher, Chin Music Press. Here's a sample of her review:
In seamless counterpoint to the philosophical current, Shimoda shapes a delicate mystery that grows darker as the novel progresses. The book itself is a fine work of art, with a gorgeous, embossed cover, rice-paper-thin pages, and textured paper inserts with illustrations that offer clues to Zack's fate- a triumphant kick in the pants for anyone who doubts the future of paper-and-ink books.
