KOBO hosts On Ensemble CD/DVD Release Party on May 20th
 
Los-Angeles based On Ensemble's sound ranges from centuries-old Kabuki music to contemporary indie rock and from free jazz to hip-hop electronica. Their instruments include hand-made taiko by Miyamoto Unosuke Shouten - instrument maker to the Emperor of Japan.
 
Come hear the On Ensemble musicians Masato Baba and Kristofer Bergstrom perform and speak about their music at Kobo at Higo before their Seattle debut at The Triple Door on May 22nd.
 
CDs will be available for $18 and DVDs for $25.  A Q and A session will follow with musician, Byron Au Yong.

Calligraphy on fusuma

Hiroko Watanabe is a performance artist working with a large brush and sumi ink.  She performs at Kobo and will create calligraphy as you have never seen or experienced before.  Shodo Live is not to be missed!
 
Hiroko began learning calligraphy 30 years ago at the early age of 8 and is now a "hanshi" or master of calligraphy.  Her works include logo design, calligraphy art for interiors , shop display art, installation art, and has performed for large exhibitions and events as well as teaches calligraphy. 
Creating her own style of calligraphy she began her career as a professional artist in 1996. She is an artist based in Nagoya, Japan.

 

Hiroko Watanabe will be here in Seattle in May to perform her calligraphy on

stage for Seattle's Folklife Festival and will have an exhibit of her work at KOBO Gallery at Higo.

 

 "I create calligraphy not just as art to look at but hope to make a connection with anyone who looks at my work."
