Crafts that sell

The Annual FNVW Holiday Fair is fast approaching.  It's December 3 and 4, at the usual location, Minneapolis Friends Meeting House. (For more information)

We hope you're planning to come and to volunteer.

If you're itching to get into the Holiday Fair mood, consider making something.

Crafts and other home-made items make up the largest portion of  revenue for the Friends for a Non-Violent World Holiday Fair. Over the years certain items sell more quickly and are purchased at the ticketed amount.

These include jellies or jams, breads, pies, cookies, dishrags, towels, hot pads, aprons, scarfs, candles, journals, or quilted items. People especially like items that have a peace, community, or holiday motif.

Items creatively wrapped for the holiday season are quickly snapped up!

We look forward to seeing you at the Holiday Fair!

Reese Erlich Book-signing and Conversation
Event Featured Passionate, Fearless Speaker

On October 19th, journalist/author Reese Erlich delighted and Erlich at FNVWchallenged a full house with compelling stories and insights from his most recent book Conversations with Terrorists.  Reece works in mainstream press and radio organizations such as the San Francisco Chronicle and NPR. Yet he appears to be fearless in tackling a US foreign policy that has done much damage.
He argues that by falsely labeling virtually every opponent as a "terrorist," the U.S. creates new enemies and makes fighting the real terrorists all the more difficult.

In interviewing six Middle Eastern leaders, such as Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad and Hamas' top leader Khaled Meshal, who have at times been falsely labeled terrorists, he applied that same sharp critical analysis.  He assigns both credit and blame  to all sides on this decade's key foreign
policy issue: the global war on terror.

Erlich also offered challenges to the local community of peace activists.  He believes in the power of the street, of strategic organizing, and the necessity of not giving up.  He parried several comments about how difficult it is to organize in these times with quiet passion: we need to figure out what social change strategy and tactics will work, and do them.

Thank you, Reese Erlich, for informing us and pushing us to keep believing in our own work.

Ways of Peace II: Non-Violence in the Islamic Traditions
April 9, 2011 at University of St Thomas, St Paul, MN

Ways of Peace II: Non-Violence in the Islamic Traditions  will be the second in a series organized by Friends for A Non-Violent World (FNVW). The series is exploring the roots, history and practice of nonviolence in various faith and secular traditions.

We have four top-notch presenters confirmed, with more to come:   Dr. Adil Ozdemir from the Muslim Christian Dialogue Center of St. Thomas; Ms. Afra Jalabi, a Fellow at the Salam Institute for Peace and Justice, and a WISE Shura Council member in Canada;
Dr. Fatma Reda, a leader in the local Muslim community; and Dr. Yahya Michot, professor of Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary.

This conference grows out of our concern over the stereotypical, one-dimensional view of Islam as a religion of violence and intolerance, which condones or advocates terrorism.  The advocacy and practice of peace, tolerance, nonviolence, arbitration, negotiations and mediation by Islamic scholars, leaders, activists and adherents  in the various communities of Islam gets short shrift in the media and is not well-known or understood in Minnesota or nationwide.

At a time of enormous conflict and change between and within the traditions and communities of Islam and non-Islamic traditions and communities, we believe a deeper understanding of Islam's use of and contribution to nonviolent theory and practice is crucial to peacemaking at all levels.

Ways of Peace is cosponsored by the University of St. Thomas Muslim Christian Dialogue Center, its Justice and Peace Studies Department, and FNVW.
