Mayo Clinic Recommends

Kids

Children and adolescents age 6 and older need at least an hour a day of physical activity. Most of the hour should be either moderate or vigorous aerobic activity. In addition, children should participate in muscle-strengthening and bone-strengthening activities at least three days a week. Many classic activities - such as playing on playground equipment and jumping rope - cover all the bases at once.

Adults

Most healthy adults need at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity, such as brisk walking or swimming, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity, such as running - preferably spread throughout the week.  Adults also need strength training exercises at least twice a week.

Make Fitness a Family Affair!

Making fitness a family affair is easier done than said with our new group Personal Training program.  We have had the pleasure of working with Linda and Ben Betzer for the past few years.  Since starting, they have led by example to encourage other family members to get moving, make healthier food choices, and make being fit a fun part of their family's life!

"My husband and I started working out shortly after retiring 4

years ago.  Since that time, our daughter, son, daughter in law and grandson have started

regular works outs also.  It is very rewarding to be part of the change in our family to get healthier and become more physically active.  We all really enjoy (if that is possible) our weekly private fitness training and several of us take weekly Pilates reformer classes also.  It is fun as a family to discuss what is best for us to eat and talk about what muscles are sore this time!" Linda said.

Their grandson Travis, who is 12 years old, plays basketball,

and goes to St John's school in Orange, comes into Private Fitness twice per week.  He does one Mother-Son workout and one Father-Son workout. We have seen the benefits for the Carter family in more than just a physical way. This is not only about making time to be fit, but also about spending time together, leading by example, keeping each other accountable, and supporting one another to be healthy.

As one of their trainers, I can tell you that this exchange is not always one-sided.  Often times, it is Travis who keeps his busy parents accountable with his dedication to his workouts and helps challenge his parents to work harder by his own willingness to push himself.  It is truly a beautiful thing to watch this family interact with each other in such a healthy, dynamic way while instilling great healthy habits that will last each of them a lifetime.

Don't do what I say...
do what I do!
"I feel proud that my parents have noticed how hard I've worked.  I have more energy, can jump a lot higher, and run faster than I did a couple of months ago." Travis said.

Dr. Ron Eaker, author of Fat-Proof Your Family, says that, "exercising with children reprograms kids to understand what is normal and what is not. Kids today believe that a sedentary lifestyle is normal. They have a skewed perception of 'normal', but exercising with them ingrains a new standard of what is normal."  Good job Steve and Gina Carter for giving Travis the tools to take ownership of his health and starting this new 'normal' in your family!

Kim Hahn...
Happy and Healthy!

Meet Kim, the Betzer's oldest daughter, who is a mother of two, wife, and dedicated teacher at Orange Lutheran High School. Kim has always had a strong work ethic and a loving heart making time for herself easily forfeited in her quest to give more to others. Kim has made this her time to get healthy, strong and fit, we are so proud of her!  "Mid summer last year I was inspired by both the athleticism of my children and the dedication of my parents to their fitness routine. God has created us to be physical.  As I began working out I saw results not only in my body, but in the ways I was able to serve Him.  I have more energy, better health, and the opportunity to form and nourish new relationships.  I exercise 4 days a week.  I would encourage everyone to start, even if it only means starting small."
