Heads-Up!

A great new concept from Polaroid is coming this September

The POGO (Polaroid on the go) is a pocket size printer using a new Zink technology (zero ink).  The ink is imbedded in the paper so the printer needs no ink or cartridges.  This enables the printer to be very small and totally portable

The printer produces smudge-proof, water-resistant, tear-proof, long lasting, 2" x 3" photos from cell phones and digital cameras

In  November, Polaroid plans to release it's own digital cameras with built in printers

Beach Fence                                                           Photo Yvonne Berger

The picture above by Yvonne Berger, Brad Berger's wife and one of our top instructors, demonstrates how simplicity, pattern, composition and proper exposure can make a fence on a beach into a beautiful picture that has me wanting to take off my shoes and socks and go for a long walk in the sand.

For those who have not attended one of the many classes offered by Yvonne at the Berger Bros. School of Photography & Digital Imaging, you will not be disappointed.  Yvonne has a way of making complicated technical stuff easy and enjoyable to absorb. Two of the classes she will be teaching in the near future are:

- Photoshop Elements Intermediate - $69.95 Part 1 Thursday, June 5th and Part 2 Thursday, June 12th. from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Syosset store. This class will go over raw and batch processing, layers, sharpening, collage techniques and adjustments.  A laptop is recommended.

- Macro Photography  - $69.95 Saturday, June 7th, Saturday from 9am to 12pm at a private residence in Northport.  Learn different lighting techniques for macro photography including macro ring lights.  An array of macro lenses, Giotto tripods, flashes, ring lights and Lens Babies will be available for use during the class.

Beach Photography

I don't have to tell you how beautiful the beach can be.  Getting good pictures that capture that beauty is the challenge.

Tips
- Try to put a focal point in the picture...a sail boat on the
horizon or a couple off in the distance walking along the shore.

- As with all outdoor pictures, early morning or late afternoon is the best time to shoot.

- Use a flash for portraits on the beach.  This will let you illuminate the subject and overcome harsh shadows on his or her face.

-Use a polarizing filter to get a deep blue sky contrasted with white clouds.  This filter will also reduce glare reflecting off the water and sand.

- Beach pictures are often underexposed because the over-all scene is so bright.  If your camera can be switched to manual, over expose by a stop or two to compensate.  Or you can use your camera's exposure compensation feature to over-expose by a stop or two.

- In a calm moment at home, familiarize yourself with how to use the exposure compensation feature of your camera. And, if your camera provides a histogram read-out learn how to interpret it.  This way you will know in the moment that your exposures are correct.

And remember, sand, surf and cameras are a bad mix.   If you will be taking that expensive D-SLR or point-and-shoot to the beach, pick up an inexpensive Rain Sleeve

Optech Rain Sleeve to block fine sand
particles from blowing into crevices on your camera's surface.  You will also be protected from salt water spray or an unexpected shower.  Just $9.99 in store.

For as little as $29.99, you can buy an Aqua Pac Aqua pac-sm
that is 100% waterproof and submersible to 15 feet.  Other sizes fit D-SLR's, all types of point-and-shoot cameras, PDA's, cell phones, even Camcorders.

An amazingly rugged 10.1 MP point-and-shoot camera that can go anywhere including under water is the Olympus Stylus 1030. Waterproof to 33 Stylus 1030 waterprooffeet, shock resistant, dust proof, freeze proof and even crush proof.  Great for divers, surfers, skiers, hikers, rafters and anyone with an active lifestyle.  Shown in green, also available in silver or black - $399.99

Another rugged model that would make a great father's day or graduation gift is the Olympus Stylus 850 SW Deluxe Summer Stylus 850Kit.  The Stylus 850 is an 8.0 MP, 3x optical zoom camera with face detection, digital image stabilization and underwater movie in a shock proof, waterproof to 10 feet, dust proof, freeze proof body.  Shown in yellow, also available in black, silver, blue, and pink - $299.99

Underwater Photography

In 1856, William Thompson is credited with taking the first underwater pictures using a camera mounted on a pole.  Today, there are numerous underwater housings for many brand name still and video cameras that enable the photographer to take remarkably beautiful images of a world we normally never see: exotic fish, marine animals, coral reefs and underwater landscapes, even ship wrecks.

Because underwater photography relies on special equipment, techniques and scuba diving skills it is no doubt one of the most challenging of photographic endeavors.

The primary obstacle is to get colorful images in a world where everything appears to be blue-green.  Underwater photographers overcome this phenomenon by using wide angle and macro lenses to get as close to the subject as possible - sometimes inches from the subject.

Another technique is to use fill flash.  This full spectrum light source restores color to a subject that appears to have none because of the color loss caused by the water.

Other technical issues such as overcoming distortion must be addressed for maximum results.  This can be done with special dome-shaped housings.  Of course, there are other technical considerations to address that are really beyond the scope of this general commentary and that is where Berger Bros. Camera becomes an invaluable tool in itself.  Our experienced staff can help you sort through what you need and what you don't.

Enjoy your self!
