"Oh beautiful for spacious skies."  As this photo attests, Ed Szczepanski is another talented photographer working at Berger

Bros.camera.

But you don't have to go 3,000 miles to find beautiful landscapes. Grab your camera gear and a picnic lunch and visit the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay.  You'll find wonderful and unique trees, expansive fields and a picturesque stone mansion built at the beginning of the last century.  Check out www.Plantingfields.org

Another great spot is a few hours drive but well worth it - Mohonk.  The vistas are magnificent!  There is an incredible Victorian hotel there but it is not necessary to stay at the hotel to enjoy 85 miles of hiking trails surrounding the hotel.  Check out www.Mohonk.com

Landscape Photography

"...all landscapes ask the same question in the same whisper. 'I am watching you - are you watching yourself in me?'" - Lawrence Durrell

Seven quick tips for taking better landscapes:

1.  Don't put the horizon line smack in the middle and keep it level.

2.  Use a small aperture (f stop) to get maximum depth of field, i.e., have as much in focus as possible.

3.  Shoot early in the morning or late in the afternoon for best results.

4.  Look for patterns or a single element (a tree or a solitary figure) that give the picture a sense of scale.

5.  Use a circular polarizing filter.  It enhances a blue sky making it darker against white clouds, makes greens more vivid and eliminates glare. Polarizing filters work best when the sun is behind you or at your side.

6.  Use the lowest ISO to minimize grain.

7.  Use a tripod to get sharp images - A tripod is essential to accommodate the slower shutter speeds necessary to allow for the reduction of light caused by smaller apertures and low ISO.  I personally recommend Manfrotto tripods

Enjoy your self!

 Nikon 400mm zoom lens
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 400mm f/2.8G ED VR Lens

This is a super telephoto lens, optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX and DX format image sensors.

Vibration Reduction (VRII) minimizes the effects of camera shake, allowing photographers to shoot at as many as four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper images.

Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.

Three ED(Extra-low Dispersion) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing sharpness and contrast, even at the widest apertures.
