The Crucial Role of Predators: A New Perspective on Ecology
Scientists have recently begun to understand the vital role played by top predators in ecosystems and the profound impacts that occur when those predators are wiped out. Now, researchers are citing new evidence that shows the importance of lions, wolves, sharks, and other creatures at the top of the food chain.

Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)
How Can We Create Jobs, Reduce Food Prices and Boost Economies?
Recent analysis by WRI's team of experts, working with the Global Partnership on Forest Landscape Restoration, has unveiled one of the greatest potential opportunities for combined economic and environmental gains. We estimate that over two billion hectares of land has potential to be restored, providing better soil, water, and natural resources that improve human wellbeing locally and globally. These "lands of opportunity" have suffered various forms of degradation. All were originally forested and would benefit people with varying degrees of restoration.

Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
Australia: Indigenous knowledge boosts scientific information of natural world Indigenous students from Kormilda College are taking part in the junior ranger program on Elcho Island in north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-09-16/traditional-knowledge-boosts-scientific/2903630
Nicaragua: Indigenous people vow to preserve their lands The indigenous governments said the settlers living both inside the reserve and in the buffer zone must reforest the area and they demanded better training for the mostly Mayangna coast guards, who were trying to protect the area. Indigenous leaders complained that the vision of the government and of environmental groups is merely ecological, and do not include the indigenous cosmovision. http://lapress.org/articles.asp?art=6458

Agro-Ecology
Multifunctional agroforestry systems in India: science-based policy options Land-use options that increase resilience and reduce vulnerability of contemporary societies are fundamental to livelihoods improvement and adaptation to climate change. Agroforestry as a wide-spread land-use adaptation may potentially support livelihoods improvement through simultaneous production of food, fodder and firewood as well as mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Drawing on the representative literature from peer-reviewed research, this paper critically examines the contribution of agroforestry systems in India to: biodiversity conservation; yield of goods and services to society; augmentation of the carbon storage in agroecosystems; enhancing the fertility of the soils; and providing social and economic well-being to people. http://www.indiaenvironmentportal.org.in/reports-documents/multifunctional-agroforestry-systems-india-science-based-policy-options |
Biodiversity & Climate Change
Pakistan: 'Floods caused ecosystem imbalance' Speaking at the inaugural session of a two-day international conference on latest techniques for conservation of animal genetic resource in Pakistan on Wednesday, US Agriculture Counselor Richard Todd Drennan said that biodiversity was a big challenge faced by the ecosystems globally. He said that the protection of biodiversity through environmental restoration and production of rare species to save them from extinction were needed. http://www.pakistantoday.com.pk/2011/09/%E2%80%98floods-caused-ecosystem-imbalance%E2%80%99/ |
Oregon: First timber lease in place under forest pilot project The U.S. Bureau of Land Management made its first timber lease in a forest restoration pilot project in southern Oregon. The project is part of an effort devised by forest ecology professors Norm Johnson of Oregon State and Jerry Franklin of the University of Washington to preserve the largest trees and habitat for endangered species while producing wood for mills and reducing fuel for wildfires. http://www.registerguard.com/web/newslocalnews/26894475-41/project-lease-oregon-pilot-timber.html.csp |
Wetland Restoration
Hydraulic Resistance due to Emergent Wetland Vegetation Water storage in wetlands is dynamic, depending on the rate of inputs and outputs. Surface inflows and outflows are often extremely important to the wetland water budget; outflow is often estimated, at least in part, using the hydraulic resistance within the wetland. This project evaluated existing models of flow resistance from emergent wetland vegetation and developed a new model based on measureable properties of the vegetation. This model was evaluated using data from a controlled flood of a constructed floodplain wetland. http://www.cws.bse.vt.edu/index.php/research/project/hydraulic_resistance_due_to_emergent_wetland_vegetation
India: Forest Department to get marshland The Forest Department, which plans to undertake restoration of the eco-sensitive Pallikaranai marshland, will soon get 421 acres for the purpose from the Chennai Corporation. The land transfer would facilitate proper demarcation and hydro-ecological assessment. It would also establish the Forest Department as the single agency for better restoration and preservation of the area. The civic body is planning to use only around 200 acres elsewhere in the marshland for its solid waste management project in Perungudi. http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Chennai/article2458420.ece |
River & Watershed Restoration
California: Interior Secretary Ken Salazar jabs GOP on San Joaquin River pact U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar took some shots Monday at Republican efforts to roll back environmental protections and repeal a historic agreement on river restoration in California. The GOP majority in the House is floating a number of bills that would freeze or dismantle an array of environmental regulations, arguing that they strangle business and hurt the economy. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace/2011/09/ken-salazar-san-joaquin-river-restoration.html |
Coastal & Marine Restoration
Native Americans demand a say in coastal restoration plans Louisiana's update of its coastal restoration and hurricane protection master plan needs to address the concerns of Native Americans that their communities will be sacrificed in the name of "trade-off," several representatives of the United Houma Nation told state officials Wednesday night. Native Americans in Pointe au Chien, Dulac, Montegut and other coastal communities fear their communities will be sacrificed in the name of "trade-off" as the state updates its master plan for coastal protection and restoration, representatives of the United Houma Nation. http://www.nola.com/environment/index.ssf/2011/09/native_americans_demand_a_say.html
Louisiana: Coastal Habitat Restoration Projects are Better for the Economy A new report released today shows that investing in coastal habitat restoration will create jobs at a higher rate than many other sectors. The "jobs and dollars" report shows every $1 million invested in wetland reconstruction and improvement would create up to 32 jobs. This is compared to seven for road infrastructure projects and only five for oil and gas. http://setxhomepage.com/fulltext?nxd_id=151077
New Jersey: Baykeeper to resume oyster restoration project "Historically this area was known for its oystering, but unfortunately oysters are extinct in the Raritan Bay," Debbie Mans, executive director of Baykeeper, said. "This project is to determine if the oysters can survive and grow in this part of the Raritan Bay." The cages filled with seed oysters will be placed off the pier at Earle and will be monitored throughout the winter and into the spring. http://ind.gmnews.com/news/2011-09-22/Front_Page/Baykeeper_to_resume_oyster_restoration_project.html |

Funding Opportunities
The Gulf of Mexico Foundation's Community-based Restoration Partnership has reached a milestone by providing grants for now more than 75 different projects in coastal areas throughout the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Restoring a total of about 15,000 acres over the past decade, these CRP projects have improved a wide variety of habitat types, including coastal dunes, coral reefs, oyster reefs, marshes, seagrass beds, mangrove forests and artificial reefs. Funding from NOAA and EPA make it possible for the GMF to provided more than $3 million to projects. Other partners have contributed an additional $5.5 million in funding. The GMF is offering a new round of CRP funding for 2012. http://www.gulfmex.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/GCRP2012RFP.pdf
