Washington: Restoring a Wetland in 25 Days
Dr. Warren Gold, associate professor at UW Bothell and Director of the UW Restoration Ecology Network, is an expert on the restoration of freshwater wetlands. He also is technical advisor and de-facto conscience of the highly successful wetland restoration at the UW Bothell campus. The campus wetlands comprise 58-acres of restored natural habitat that served logging interests in the 1800s, and was a cattle ranch well into the 1990s.

Restoration of ecosystem services and biodiversity: conflicts and opportunities
Ecological restoration is becoming regarded as a major strategy for increasing the provision of ecosystem services as well as reversing biodiversity losses. Here, we show that restoration projects can be effective in enhancing both, but that conflicts can arise, especially if single services are targeted in isolation. Furthermore, recovery of biodiversity and services can be slow and incomplete. Despite this uncertainty, new methods of ecosystem service valuation are suggesting that the economic benefits of restoration can outweigh costs. Payment for Ecosystem Service schemes could therefore provide incentives for restoration, but require development to ensure biodiversity and multiple services are enhanced and the needs of different stakeholders are met. Such approaches must be implemented widely if new global restoration targets are to be achieved.

Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)

Seed bank pressure may benefit from 'building off' remnant vegetation
Good planning and establishment techniques-as well as smart use of remnant vegetation-can help tackle the perceived lack of restoration-ready seeds to revegetate large areas of cleared land. "Instead of restoring 10,000 hectares right away in a landscape that has been cleared, it may be more realistic to build off healthy remnant vegetation to increment and spread existing seed resources." In response to recent concerns that worldwide seed banks will never be able to supply adequate seed quantities to restore degraded lands, Threshold Environmental Restoration Ecologist Justin Jonson says there are several ways to overcome the issue.

US: Northwest Forest Plan has unintended benefit - carbon sequestration
The Northwest Forest Plan enacted in 1993 was designed to conserve old-growth forests and protect species such as the northern spotted owl, but researchers conclude in a new study that it had another powerful and unintended consequence - increased carbon sequestration on public lands.

Nepal: Growing money from carbon
Sita KC with a team of field researchers and community forest users group of Dolakha has hiked through dense forests in Dolakha. Guided by the team of forest rangers and other experts, KC and representatives of different community forests in Dolakha have spent days in Charnawati Watershed area spread over 5,996 hectares of forest land to determine how much carbon is stored there. "Charnawati sequestered a total of almost 4.6 million tons of carbon dioxide in 2011," said KC proudly. The watershed area was paid $45,535 for playing an important role in forest conservation.

Oregon: Lawsuit funds to aid habitat restoration
Some $625,000 of a $2.5 million fund established this week as a result of an air pollution lawsuit against Portland General Electric will go to environmental and habitat restoration projects in Northeast Oregon. Brian Kelly, restoration coordinator for the La Grande-based Hells Canyon Preservation Council, said Tuesday the $625,000 is earmarked for a sub-fund for projects in Union and Wallowa counties.

Hawaii: East Moloka'i Project Seeks Forest Restoration
Plans are in the works to protect and restore an estimated 15 acres of land in East Moloka'i. The Kainalu Mesic Forest Restoration Project includes the removal of invasive plant species, the planting of native species, and the installation of a 1.5 mile fence to confine cattle and other feral animals to pasture areas.

Wetland Restoration

California: Novato Garden Project: Aiming to Restore Marin County Wetlands
There is a 50-acre former military base in Novato, Marin, an upscale neighborhood just north of San Francisco, know for its vast mountainsides and proximity to Napa Valley. The once-military base now consists of an abandoned dump, a dilapidated shed littered with broken glass bottles, a mess of overgrown weeds, and ammo bunkers covered with graffiti. It's something of a tragedy because the land has all the necessary components to be a thriving wetland, and once was just that. This area of land is not alone -- there are about 200,000 acres of wetlands habitats in the San Francisco Bay Area that have been abandoned, like this one, or vastly commercially developed.

Wetlands: 10 point Sabah Charter to address the challenges
The Ramsar Convention and its basic "Wise Use" tenet of wetlands and their resources, pins down the importance of wetlands in supporting human wellbeing. The Asian Wetlands symposium here represents a regional effort to enhance the synergy in implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity , the Ramsar Convention , plus other initiatives such as the Unesco Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme and the Non-legally Binding Instrument of All Types of Forests, deemed critical to achieving the "Aichi Biodiversity Targets" and the MDGs.

River & Watershed Restoration

North Carolina: Robinson Creek stream restoration in W. Asheville, five years after
In 2005, RiverLink was awarded a grant from the Clean Water Management Trust Fund to implement a 3600-linear-foot stream restoration on Robinson Creek in the south Asheville area. The purpose of the grant was to return Robinson Creek to a more natural and stable conditions, using natural stream design methods. Robinson Creek is an urban stream in Arden that runs through the then proposed Ethos Development, which was scheduled to contain a golf course surrounded by upscale housing.

Washington: Mill Creek restoration effort picks up steam
Mill Creek has long been a focus of university crews, but their efforts ramped up when Clark Public Utilities joined this year. Behind the strength of a $250,000 state grant, the utility's StreamTeam program will help the campus control invasive species, replant native vegetation and stabilize stream banks to prevent erosion.

Grassland Restoration

Offset your carbon footprint by planting a meadow
Forget planting a tree. If you really want to fight climate change and boost wildlife, you would be better off investing your money in protecting a local wild flower meadow.

Lake Restoration

New York: Project aims to revive largest intact wetlands system on Lake Ontario's southern shore
Once the area is cleaned up, ecologists expect more species to return and repopulate the area. TNC staffers use the population of wetland-dwelling black terns, a small blackish-gray bird that nests in cattails, to quantify marshland health. The healthier the habitat, the more black turns will flock back to the Eastern Lake Ontario Wetlands Complex.

On Lake Taihu, China Moves To Battle Massive Algae Blooms
For two decades, the once-scenic Lake Taihu in eastern China has been choked with devastating algae blooms that have threatened drinking water for millions. Now, in a move that could provide lessons for other huge lakes worldwide, China is taking steps to restore Taihu's ecological balance. http://e360.yale.edu/feature/on_lake_taihu_china_moves_to_battle_massive_algae_blooms/2429/

Connecticut: Long Beach West Cottage Removal and Habitat Restoration
Thirty-seven cottages and multiple other structures were removed from a 35-acre stretch of barrier beach in Stratford, CT. The area now provides habitat for many animal species, including the federally threatened piping plover. This project was awarded a Department of the Interior Environmental Achievement Award and was funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act dollars.

Snakes threaten Hawaii's fragile island ecosystem
Hawaii has been largely successful in preventing snakes from entering the island paradise over the years and avoiding the grave danger they present to tropical birds, colorful plants and the vibrant environment that draws millions of tourists to the state each year. But the recent capture of escaped pet snakes -- illegal in Hawaii -- and the infestation of Guam by brown tree snakes, which could easily make it here via cargo ship, have alarmed wildlife and agriculture officials.
