Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)

Editorial: Clean water, healthy economy

Money is already rolling this way for economic fixes, and more will come from the fine money. But as research from University of West Florida economist Rick Harper shows, Northwest Florida is almost unique across the Gulf Coast in how closely the health of the economy is tied to the health of the environment.

Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)

Blending Science Knowledge with Ancient Traditions

On Yap, a Pacific island that is part of Micronesia, the native people fish the traditional way. They construct kites made of bread fruit leaves, the spines of the Pandanus plant and coconut fiber rope, and fly them over the reef, dropping their lines to attract long-nose needlefish. These are the only fish the islanders want, and the only ones lured by this unusual gear. "It's ecologically sound and sustainable, and they have been doing it for generations," says Robert H. Richmond, a research professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. "More importantly, no Western scientist could teach them a better way."

NASA researchers release new images of forest carbon distribution

A NASA-led research team has used a variety of NASA satellite data to create the most precise map ever produced depicting the amount and location of carbon stored in Earth's tropical forests. The data are expected to provide a baseline for ongoing carbon monitoring and research and serve as a useful resource for managing carbon dioxide. The new map, created from ground- and space-based data, shows, for the first time, the distribution of carbon stored in forests across more than 75 tropical countries. Approximately half of that carbon is stored in the extensive forests of Latin America.

More livestock is climate change key
Livestock are the best tool available to arrest the impact of environmental degradation on climate change, grazing management pioneer Allan Savory told Australians this week. Mr Savory, who gave the keynote address to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Bonn a fortnight ago, admits that his assessment is counter-intuitive and "extremely unpopular" when held against the widespread view that livestock are responsible for the collapse of ecosystems.

Indonesia: Govt reduces area of forests protected by moratorium
The government issued a new version of a forest map, revising down the size of primary forests and conservation areas in the forest moratorium to 55 million hectares. The new map, posted on the Forestry Ministry website Monday, highlights 55 million hectares of primary forests and conservation areas and 17 million hectares of peatland estimated to store 1 billion tons of carbon.

New studies suggest lack of meaningful land rights threaten Indonesian forests
Indonesia losing out to China, Viet Nam, where tenure boosts economies, forest cover. New research released today at a high-level forestry conference in Indonesia-opened by Vice President Boediono-suggests that Asia's largest forest nation is paying a high price for failing to give local communities enforceable rights to contested forests, causing significant economic losses owing to its highly undervalued forestland, and leading it to lose out to regional competitors. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-07/bc-nss071111.php
Wetland Restoration

UK: Wetland loss threatens wildlife and people

More wetlands need to be created across the UK to safeguard wildlife and human health and prosperity, according to leading experts. Nearly one hundred of the country's top wetland conservation scientists met last week to discuss the threat to wetlands, the wildlife they support and their ability to treat water and prevent flooding.

Uganda: Flower farms and real estate choking Lutembe wetland
On the shores of Lake Victoria off Entebbe Road, lies the Lutembe Bay wetland, famous as a Ramsar site and recognised internationally for its unique biodiversity and as an important bird area. But Lutembe may not be around for long. The bay is fast being swallowed up by the horticultural and real estate industries, which have been encroaching on the wetland. On one side, flower farms have swamped the wetland and on the other, upmarket residential buildings complete the picture of wetland destruction. http://www.theeastafrican.co.ke/magazine/Flower+farms+and+real+estate+choking+Lutembe+wetland/-/434746/1197894/-/jg58bc/-/

Washington: Tearing down the past builds healthier future for wetlands
With the federal push to protect salmon, restoration projects like those at Fort Columbia and Otter Point are getting more attention. The data collected at Fort Columbia, for instance, will be valuable in guiding projects as the site monitors look at how salmon respond to and benefit from the reopened habitat.

A quarry site near Mold has become a part of an innovative project set to make a breakthrough in sustainable land restoration where no topsoil is available. The site, part of the Lloyds Quarries, Fron Haul Sand and Gravel, was selected as part of a project led by WRAP Cymru (Waste & Resources Action Programme in Wales) where a 2,000 sq metre section was used to experiment into how bio-fertiliser and quality compost can be used to restore the land and enable the growth of plants and trees.
Invasive Species

UK: EU-backed project aims to eradicate invasive Indian plant

An EU-funded project to eradicate an invasive plant which is eroding land and putting important fish habitats in a north Cork river at risk, will be formally announced tomorrow by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan. Himalayan Balsam, which was introduced from India as an ornamental plant for its pretty pink flower, has spread from gardens and roadsides and is now causing major problems on river banks and habitats throughout Ireland including in north Cork.

Urban Restoration

Missouri: Wildlife may find new urban haven
The project at the old site of the city's second sewer treatment plant is being funded through a $40,000 grant from 3M, plus $20,000 collected from Columbia's park sales tax. It is meant to restore the area's natural habitat around Hinkson Creek. Columbia Parks and Recreation received 3M's Foundation Environmental Stewardship Grant to create the habitat near the Forum Nature Area, and more than 10 departments and companies are working together on the construction. http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/2011/jul/05/wildlife-may-find-new-urban-haven/
