New Resources Aim to Quantify Economic Impact of Forest and Watershed Restoration in Oregon

University of Oregon's Ecosystem Workforce Program developed the tools to predict and monitor the economic effects of restoration work. A new set of resources from the University of Oregon are intended to help forest and watershed restoration leaders predict and monitor the local economic impacts of ecological restoration in the state.

Fencing nears completion to protect Hawaii trees

A project to build fencing to guard endangered trees in a remote Big Island forest is nearing completion, West Hawaii Today reported Tuesday. Workers were contending with heat, strong winds, and a terrain that includes hidden, sharp lava rock, to install the final phase of barrier around a 275-acre dry land forest near Waikoloa Village on Monday. Laying some 8,000 feet of fencing requires workers to run across the land, grabbing onto wire fencing suspended from a helicopter. http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/article/Fencing-nears-completion-to-protect-Hawaii-trees-1444522.php

GMO Crops Unleashed on Wildlife Refuges as "Habitat Restoration" by Obama Admin

The Obama administration has approved the strategic planting of genetically engineered seeds on more than 50 National Wildlife Refuges in the Midwest as part of region-wide habitat restoration efforts. http://my.firedoglake.com/tucsonrobert1/2011/06/27/gmo-crops-unleashed-on-wildlife-refuges-as-habitat-restoration-by-obama-admin/

Butterfly data to help guide restoration work
By tagging the delicate creatures, scientists and naturalists can learn which nectar-producing plants are favored by the butterflies to help with habitat restoration projects. Tagging also allows researchers to document butterfly movements between tracts of land. "During the survey, at least one male moved approximately 1,000 meters from its initial capture location on Friday morning to a different area where it was recaptured early Sunday afternoon," Baltosser said. "Species movement is important because it demonstrates habitat connectivity and indicates probable gene flow."

California: Oaks offer habitat for migratory birds
The funding from the NRCS, an arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is part of $1.5 million awarded for seven conservation projects in Oregon through the Cooperative Conservation Partnership Initiative. The focus area of the Central Umpqua Oak Restoration Project includes private lands from Douglas County south through Jackson County into Siskiyou County in northern California.

New Jersey: Audubon presents restoration plans
A 300-acre forestry project on Davenport Road is aimed at creating a fire break to protect homes in Holiday Heights, and improve habitat for rare Pine Barrens plants and animals. "It's a fire-maintained system. If it doesn't burn regularly, fuel builds up," said Troy Ettel, director of stewardship and conservation for New Jersey Audubon, as he showed visitors around the group's Hovnanian Sanctuary and its habitat restoration project. "It's a danger to residents, and it's not good for some of the species that don't thrive in such heavy growth."

River & Watershed Restoration

Massachusetts: Eel river restoration complete
More than 60 acres of habitat for wildlife and the public have been restored in Plymouth - recreating a white cedar swamp with dramatic improvements to fish passage, water quality, wetlands, bird migration corridors and recreational opportunities. The $2 million Eel River project team recently won a national Coastal America Partnership Award for its multi-year effort.

Delaware: Restored wetland improves water quality of Nanticoke River
The Nanticoke River Watershed Conservancy, a citizen-based land conservation organization, recently unveiled a Delaware wetland restoration project that transformed 30-acres of disturbed wetland and forest into a healthy and productive ecosystem. NRWC's restoration partners assessed the health of the wetland, implemented a plan to remove portions of the streamside berm, and partially restored the hydrology of the wetland to improve water retention and bring the wetland back to health.

Grassland Restoration

South Africa: Back to its roots
Earlier this year, The Witness ran a story about a Department of Agriculture bungle that saw scores of KwaZulu-Natal farmers being granted permission to plough up virgin grasslands, most of them in the midlands. These grasslands had been previously identified by the South African National Biodiversity Institute as extremely valuable and to be conserved. While an attempt was made to rectify this blunder, in many cases ploughing had already gone ahead.

Oregon: Coastal Grassland Restoration Work Set to Begin at Big Creek
The goal is to restore open meadow habitat for the imperiled Oregon silverspot butterfly, a federally protected species that thrives in only a few remaining Oregon coastal grasslands. "We are very excited to expand the native prairie at Big Creek," said Debbie Pickering, Oregon Coast stewardship ecologist for The Nature Conservancy, "and to help protect this part of Oregon's natural heritage for future generations."

Coastal & Marine Restoration

Florida: Sanibel reef gives oysters a shot
Sanibel's Clam Bayou got an 11,000-pound shot of habitat restoration Tuesday in the form of a new oyster reef. For most of an 85-degree morning, staff from the city of Sanibel and the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Marine Laboratory, along with two volunteers, loaded 400 25- to 30-pound mesh bags filled with fossilized shell onto a small barge, motored to a site on the eastern shore of the bayou, and placed the shell in the water. Over time, oyster larvae will settle on the shell, grow up to filter the bayou's water and provide habitat for fish and invertebrates.

Task force: Restoring sediment key to Gulf revival
Restoring the flow of sediment to Gulf Coast wetlands and barrier islands that are key wildlife habitats and provide crucial protection from storms is one of the biggest challenges officials face as they seek to restore a region whose long-time ecological problems came into focus after last year's disastrous oil spill.

Florida: Bishop Harbor gets lift from restoration
Officials hope ongoing restoration project will help fend off effects from Piney leak. Over 45 years, the northern Manatee County harbor has been the unwilling recipient of various ecological insults, since a phosphate plant was first built upstream from it in 1966. The latest episode: a leak of millions of gallons per day of contaminated discharge, drained through ditches to the harbor over past weeks from a facility that disposes of dredge material.

Mexican Spotted Owl Recovery Plan Calls for Expanded Thinning to Restore Habitat, Reduce Severe Fire Risk
As thousands of acres of Mexican spotted owl habitat smolder in the wake of a major wildfire on the Arizona-New Mexico border, the nocturnal bird gets a brand new recovery plan tomorrow that U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service officials say could recover the Southwestern owl within 10 years.

Extractive Industries

Iowa: Turning quarries into wetlands
S&G Materials, an Iowa City mining company that provides materials such as concrete, sand, rock, dirt and soil primarily to construction companies, is five years into a 30-year wetlands restoration project. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers requires restoration in exchange for permitting businesses or other entities to disturb natural wetlands.

Invasive Species

India: Plenty of fishes in Ganga cheers consumers, worries experts
The fish lovers are having a good time in the city as sudden increase of about 10 feet in Ganga water level has brought in a plenty of fishes in the river. It resulted in a sharp decline in fish price in the city. Arvind Mishra, chief executive officer, fishery department, said that it is a good sign of fish biodiversity in Ganga, but at the same time, the presence of exotic or alien fishes in huge quantities has also set the alarm bells ringing for the indigenous species.

Funding Opportunities

Landowners can get USDA funds for River Restoration work
Agricultural landowners along 55 miles of the Kootenai River in Boundary County can help the Kootenai Tribe with a restoration project along the river corridor. The Tribe received special funds from the Natural Resources Conservation Service to restore and enhance fish and wildlife habitat conditions along the river. NRCS will provide financial and technical  assistance for conservation work; applications for funding will be taken through July 7, 2011.
