Book Excerpt: 'Intelligent Tinkering' By Robert Cabin
Hawaii is home to one of the world's last dry tropical forests. In their prime, these magnificent ecosystems were bastions of biodiversity. Now, only 10 percent of the state's original dry forests survive. In Intelligent Tinkering, Robin Cabin, an associate professor of ecology and environmental science at Brevard College and a former restoration ecologist for the U.S. Forest Service, draws on his own experience in doing restoration work in the few remaining Hawai'ian dry forests. http://magblog.audubon.org/book-excerpt-intelligent-tinkering-robert-cabin |

New report highlights diversity and value of Alaska's coastal forests
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-06/ufsp-nrh060111.php A new report published by the USDA Forest Service's Pacific Northwest Research Station presents summaries of current southeast and south-central Alaska forest topics, ranging from carbon and forest products to lichens and invasive species. |
Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK)
Video: Regenerating Forests with Traditional Knowledge Regenerating Forests with Traditional Knowledge Narrator: In the forest of Costa Rica, children are encouraged to learn the tradition of local plant knowledge from their elders and to carry along. A recent study found that it was small communities like this one who is responsible for most tree planting and the reforestation essential for the regeneration of the forest. http://video.ezinemark.com/regenerating-forests-with-traditional-knowledge-4321eb70b14.html |
Biodiversity & Climate Change
Tropical savanna 'can be carbon farmed' In a first for the federal government's Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI), indigenous land managers in remote regions of the north are being told they may be able to earn carbon credits for improving fire management. A vast swathe of dense grass and scattered trees constitute the tropical savanna that stretches across northern Australia from Broome to Townsville. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/breaking-news/tropical-savanna-can-be-carbon-farmed/story-e6frf7jx-1226062583017
A new eye on biodiversity For tropical ecologist Greg Asner, it's all about seeing the forest through its trees. Over the past two years, he and his team at the Carnegie Institution for Science in Stanford, California, have used world-class tree climbers, bows and arrows, and even shotguns to gather samples of vegetation from forest canopies around the globe. They have created a digital catalogue of the chemical and optical properties of some 4,700 plant species in different conditions. Now comes the moment of truth. http://www.nature.com/news/2011/110601/full/474013a.html

Forest fragmentation threatens Europe, species: UN Fires, felling and agriculture are whittling Europe's forests down into isolated patches, threatening to speed up desertification and deplete wildlife, a UN report warned Tuesday. Isolated forest patches, caused through what is called fragmentation, are more vulnerable to climate change and threaten biodiversity, the United Nations Environment Programme report said. They are also less able "to stabilise soils and supply sufficient water to the cities, companies and communities that rely on such ecosystems," it said. http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5gVAmUAyEjBl4GBpCPUYCts0MFH3g?docId=CNG.4731b3aba4df7bc97fe661f788f35488.a61
Madagascar Moves to Protect Precious Forests Madagascar's Ministry of Environment is heralding the success of a crackdown on illegal logging, notably in the country's northeast where vast protected areas have been the focus of huge trafficking scandals. The ministry says more than 1,000 precious rosewood logs have been seized in the last two weeks of policing, and that members of a so-called "logging mafia" will face trial. Conservationists welcome the move, but worry it may be temporary after recent warnings to the World Bank about the unchecked plunder of protected areas. http://www.voanews.com/english/news/africa/Madagascar-Moves-to-Protect-Precious-Forests-122883074.html |
Wetland Restoration
Texas: Wetland restoration set to start Six years ago, Ron Skjeveland decided the chronic problems caused by repetitive flooding were too much for his cozy farmstead along the Cedar River in south Austin. Following record flooding in 2004, Skjeveland started a process to convert his country home and cropland back to a natural setting as part of the Austin area's ongoing flood-mitigation efforts along the Cedar River. http://www.postbulletin.com/news/stories/display.php?id=1455745 |
