Protecting and restoring forest carbon in tropical Africa Africa's tropical forests are global climate priorities. They store more carbon than those of South-East Asia. Yet they are disappearing faster than their counterparts in Asia and Latin America. A focus on implementing forest conservation and forest restoration in tropical Africa is needed in order to avert continuing deforestation and to reverse forest degradation. http://www.trademarksa.org/news/protecting-and-restoring-forest-carbon-tropical-africa-fpan-report |
Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)
Michigan: Study says Muskegon Lake shoreline restoration worth tens of millions of dollars for the community When a university economist calculated how much value is being created by the Muskegon Lake habitat restoration project, he said he didn't even consider waterfront properties like Kirksey Investment. Grand Valley State University Economics Department Chairman Paul Isely studied the economic gains from the $10 million in federal dollars being spent on the south shore of Muskegon Lake. He said over a 10-year period, the restoration project will generate, conservatively, $66 million in economic benefits. http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/index.ssf/2011/05/muskegon_lake_shoreline_restor_1.html |
Biodiversity & Climate Change
International Day of Biodiversity - let's put conservation at the heart of politics Unless biodiversity loss goes on the agenda of every minister from transport to trade, our generation will fail the next one. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/may/20/international-day-biodiversity-heart-politics |
Opportunities for Forest and Landscape Restoration in AfricaNearly 450 million hectares of degraded forest landscapes - an area the size of the European Union - offer opportunities for restoration in Africa, more than in any other continent. Over 400 million hectares offer opportunities for mosaic restoration. These lands could support either closed forest or open woodlands and have a mosaic of land uses, including agriculture and human settlements. Approximately 50 million hectares offer opportunities for wide-scale restoration: on these lands, population pressure is lower and the climate supports closed forests. http://www.wri.org/map/opportunities-forest-and-landscape-restoration-africa |
Grassland Restoration
Great Lakes Bird Health Improves The Bartel Grassland restoration project is a citizen-led effort that began in the early 2000's to rejuvenate the grassland habitat in southern Cook County, Ill. When locals noticed the habitat of a nearby hayfield deteriorating, they began to see how it might be restored, said Judy Pollock, director of bird conservation with the Chicago branch of the Audobon Society. The problem facing the Bartel Grassland was an influx of trees, Pollock said. Conservation efforts in the 70's operated under the assumption that planting more trees was better for the environment, when the trees actually were detrimental. http://ashlandcurrent.com/article/11/05/20/great-lakes-bird-health-improves-report-shows |
Coastal & Marine Restoration
Seagrasses face extinction threat Seagrasses around the world are disappearing, with some species now threatened with extinction. The first global survey of individual seagrass species has found that 14% are at risk of going extinct. More common species are also in decline, meaning both seagrass habitat and diversity is being lost. Seagrasses provide food and habitat for a variety of ocean species including manatees, sea turtles and fish such as sea horses. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/13441738 |
Urban Restoration
Planting trees in city a community effort It's a one-person show for Jessica Franzini of the nonprofit New Jersey Tree Foundation, who spends her days organizing tree plantings in public spaces throughout the city as part of the Urban Airshed Reforestation Program. The program started with a $1 million grant in 2002, but has grown far beyond its scope. http://www.courierpostonline.com/article/20110521/NEWS01/105210363/Planting-trees-city-community-effort |
