Reforestation research in Latin America helps build better forests A tropical forest is easy to cut down, but getting it back is another story. In a special issue of the journal Forest Ecology and Management, leading researchers at the Smithsonian in Panama and across Latin America offer new insights on reforestation based on 20 years of research. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2011-05/stri-rri051711.php

Agro-Ecology
Video: Ecological restoration of unexploited agriculture land The landscape of Israel has been exploited and modified for many centuries. As a result, overall natural biodiversity is greatly reduced. The following is re-naturalization project aimed for examination and demonstration of rehabilitation techniques of formerly agricultural land. The project is part of a community nature park involving the students of Ha-Kefar Ha-Yarok Agriculture and Environment school. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZK9dH-xss8I&feature=related
Video: Farming Shrimp With the Planet in Mind The film chronicles the lifelong effort by Thornton, an Illinois native transplanted to Belize, to farm shrimp while leaving as small an imprint on ecosystems and waters as possible. She's largely succeeded, as you'll see, and is working with the World Wildlife Fund to try to develop a standard for farm-raised shrimp that can provide consumers with the confidence that they can enjoy this immensely popular seafood and a thriving environment, as well. http://dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/14/farming-shrimp-with-the-planet-in-mind/

Restoring the world's forests while feeding the poor About half the world's forest has been cleared for farming or seriously damaged by logging, fires, drainage, pollution and other ills. But where forests once grew they can grow again. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/may/18/forests-farming-food-land
US National forest rules face controversial overhaul The Forest Service in its proposed new rules aims at an "adaptive land management" strategy that will allow managers of the nation's 155 national forests to adjust for impacts such as climate change and the need to use forests as resources for not only timber but recreation, water supply, wildlife habitat, mining, wilderness and as building blocks of entire ecosystems. The rules focus not just on timber harvest, but forest restoration. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/greenspace/2011/05/national-forest-system-planning-rules.html
New Forest Code Could Hinder Climate Goals "The proposal opens up a lot of gaps," Tasso Azevedo, a forestry engineer and Ministry of Environment consultant on forests and climate, told Tierramérica. In addition to reducing the so-called permanent preservation areas that must be reforested if cleared, it establishes an amnesty for landholders who have illegally cleared forests on their properties. Under the current legislation, they are subject to fines. "This makes it seem as if the law wasn't made to be obeyed," said Azevedo. http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=55654

Wetland Restoration
Wisconsin: Wetland restoration in Stevens Point to fight floods A former drainage ditch shrouded in forest was reopened Wednesday as a meandering stream making its way though a much-needed open wetland. The Moses Creek restoration helps return a 17-acre swath of northeast Schmeeckle Reserve to a more natural ecosystem. http://www.wausaudailyherald.com/article/20110512/WDH0101/105120531/Wetland-restoration-Stevens-Point-fight-floods |
Coastal & Marine Restoration
Florida: Ibis Isle muck wasn't caused by county's environmental restoration A town and a Palm Beach County official both assured the Town Council and Ibis Isle residents Tuesday that a county environmental restoration in the Lake Worth Lagoon did not cause a buildup of smelly, ugly muck near and under the Ibis Way bridge. The residents have complained that the restoration failed because areas north and south of the small bridge, which connects Ibis Isle to Palm Beach island, weren't dredged before mangroves and grasses were planted on low-lying mounds nearby. The project occurred about a year ago. http://www.palmbeachdailynews.com/news/ibis-isle-muck-wasnt-caused-by-countys-environmental-1469605.html |

Indonesia: Down to 50, conservationists fight to save Javan Rhino from extinction Earlier this year, the International Rhino Foundation launched "Operation Javan Rhino" to prevent the extinction of the critically endangered Javan Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus), formerly found in rain forests across Southeast Asia. Operation Javan Rhino is a multi-layered project which links field conservation, habitat restoration, and management efforts with the interests of local governments and communities. http://news.mongabay.com/2011/0517-szotek_javan_rhino.html |
Invasive Species
Canada: Restoring the Devon Lakes The Devon Lakes have always been a cautionary tale of intruding on nature. In the 1960s, the lakes were stocked with brook trout for the benefit of anglers, but by the 1970s the problem was made clear. The non-native fish began to spread and push out the native species. The whole ecosystem of the area began to change. http://www.banffcragandcanyon.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3119498 |
