Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)
Our limited forests of infinite value A restoration economy would also find obvious ways to rehabilitate degraded and eroded farm land, and clean polluted waterways. Governments all over the world could take a first step toward peace by recognizing wars as blasphemy unfit for a society threatened with what is rapidly becoming the likelihood of extinction. Renewing the integrity of Planet Earth is a prime requisite for development of a lasting civilization. http://rabble.ca/news/2011/05/our-limited-forests-infinite-value
Policy and Biodiversity: A Price Tag on Biodiversity and Ecosystems In part 1 of this essay, we examined the poor job our current free market system does of putting a value on benefits we receive from the natural world, and incorporating those benefits into the prices we pay for goods and services. In part 2, I will propose some policies that might help correct the current momentum. To effectively internalize the costs of losing the ecological richness we have enjoyed to date in America and elsewhere, I would suggest that we need a combination of stronger regulatory controls over the protection of natural areas along with economic disincentives for consumers whose actions degrade biodiversity and the health of ecosystems. http://www.environmentalleader.com/2011/05/04/policy-and-biodiversity-a-price-tag-on-biodiversity-and-ecosystems-part-2-of-2/ |
Wetland Restoration
Pitching in: Students part of wetlands restoration project The same students at work on the project previously raised Chinook salmon in their classroom and released them on the American River, Ezzell said. Raising the fish, he said, gave the students a good example of why its important to be good stewards of the environment. http://www.theunion.com/article/20110505/NEWS/110509832/1066&parentprofile=1053
North Carolina: Scientists restore rare bog habitat in Flat Rock Today, the Ochlawaha bog is starting to take shape. After buying the 30-acre tract for $350,000 in 2009 and conveying it to the state, the conservancy, along with state and federal agencies, cleared the land to reveal the wetland underneath. The $500,000 restoration project re-established the stream to its original location, and native plants and trees have been replanted. Instead of rows of tomato plants, the land has taken on its original swampy feel, and birds, ducks and turtles are starting to inhabit the area. http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20110507/NEWS/305070025/Tomato-farm-bog-Scientists-restore-ancient-area?odyssey=nav%7Chead

River & Watershed Restoration
Oregon: Habitat restoration soars on Columbia River, but fish benefits are murky It's likely the biggest restoration effort in the nation, from the Columbia's mouth to tributaries deep into eastern Oregon, Idaho and Washington. If it works, it could help lift the fish off the endangered species list, dim the spotlight on dams and reduce demands for Snake River dam removal. But translating the effort into hard fish survival numbers that will satisfy the court is another story. http://www.oregonlive.com/environment/index.ssf/2011/05/will_habitat_improvementsbe_en.html |
Wildlife Restoration

Matched by more than $15.1 million in additional funds from partners, the projects will support habitat restoration, environmental education, population monitoring, and other priority activities within the ranges of neotropical migratory birds in the United States, Canada, Mexico and 13 Latin American and Caribbean countries. http://gardennews.biz/?id=5677 |
