The 13-year-old who has the world planting trees
At the age of nine, Felix Finkbeiner hatched a plan to plant a million trees in his native Germany. Now he's a global eco-superhero

Corporate Relations and The National Parks: Good Deal?

For instance, while the National Parks Conservation Association's underlying mission is to advocate and support the parks, officials there say you won't find them working towards those goals with, for example, companies that own coal-fired power plants that are responsible for airshed problems over places such as Great Smoky Mountains National Park. But relationships with companies such as Nature Valley, the granola bar maker that has committed upwards of $500,000 to the NPCA for six beneficial on-the-ground projects in places such as Acadia, Joshua Tree, and Yellowstone national parks, make great sense, they say.

Scientists detect early warning signal for ecosystem collapse

The implications of the National Science Foundation-supported study are big, says Carpenter. They suggest that, with the right kind of monitoring, it may be possible to track the vital signs of any ecosystem and intervene in time to prevent what is often irreversible damage to the environment. "With more work, this could revolutionize ecosystem management," Carpenter avers. "The concept has now been validated in a field experiment and the fact that it worked in this lake opens the door to testing it in rangelands, forests and marine ecosystems."

EU biodiversity strategy to account for value of nature

The EU's 2020 biodiversity strategy, to be presented next week, will pave the way for the value of nature to be taken into account across all policies, including factoring the environment and ecosystems into national economic plans.

Canada Election Issue: Compensating ecological goods and services

While the public receives the benefits from farm-sourced ecological goods and services, farmers bear the associated costs. The new federal government needs to recognize the value farmers contribute to such public benefits. It is now time farmers are compensated for their efforts in protecting our environment and for the losses incurred through supporting sound wildlife populations.

Biodiversity & Climate Change

The World's Tropical Forests Are Already Feeling the Heat
Much attention has been paid to how global warming is affecting the world's polar regions and glaciers. But a leading authority on tropical forests warns that rising temperatures could have an equally profound impact on rainforests and are already taking a toll on some tropical species.

A new aesthetic: Landscape design Includes habitat restoration
The future of landscape design calls for a resolution of these two differing criteria at work here - conventional landscape design criteria versus the need for habitat restoration. Where the mistake is being made is trying to shoehorn habitat restoration goals into the conventional aesthetic criteria of landscape design.

WWF warns of massive forest loss

More than 568 million acres of forest worldwide will disappear by 2050 if no action is taken, a new WWF report warns. The report calls on governments and businesses to unite around a goal of zero net deforestation and forest degradation, or ZNDD, by 2020 as a global benchmark to avoid dangerous climate change and reduce biodiversity losses.

Coastal & Marine Restoration

Ecuador: The project "Floreana, an integrated approach to restoration"
A different plan is needed here when compared to the other protected islands of the archipelago, because this is the first major restoration project on an inhabited island. Its small area and low population constitute favourable conditions to develop an integrated approach.

Wildlife Restoration

Yellowstone to Yukon: Working Together for Wildlife Restoration

In 1991, a gray wolf named Pluie was collared with a satellite transmitter in Kananaskis, Alberta. Over the course of two years she traveled through two Canadian provinces and three American states - covering an area 15 times larger than Banff National Park. Pluie's movements showed scientists just how far and wide carnivores roam, and that small 'islands' of protected parks are simply not large enough to provide animals with the freedom to roam that they require. These islands need to be connected by safe migration pathways so animals can safely travel between them.
