Habitat restoration could help species to cope with climate change
Animals and plants may need extra habitats to survive the challenge of climate change, according to research by scientists at the University of York. Human activities have reduced natural habitats to isolated "islands", making it more difficult for some species to re-locate to cooler regions in response to their existing locations growing warmer.

Peru: Guardians of the Dry Forest
Escudero, 50, takes us into the heart of this 2,400-hectare preserve of dry forest in the south of the northern Peruvian region of San Martín, in the province of Picota, nestled into one of the tributaries of the mighty Huallaga River. He is the president of the Ojos de Agua Forest of the Future Association, created in April 2006 by a group of local farmers who decided to place priority on protecting the forest, instead of continuing to clear the land to plant crops.

Alamo Navajo Project serves as forest restoration model for northern Arizona
Hope for forests and communities at risk is spreading like wildfire in an isolated village south of Albuquerque, N.M. Northern Arizona University ecologists say what's happening on the Alamo Navajo Reservation could well be a model for forest restoration across the Southwest where there are too many trees and not enough jobs. In a small lumberyard in Socorro, N.M., young adults are learning how to cut down trees, operate logging equipment and split firewood. Nearby is the Cibola National Forest, unnaturally thick with pinyon and juniper trees. The area is considered New Mexico's most dangerous place for homes and businesses during fire season.

Minnesota: Pines cleared to restore rolling prairie in St. Croix Valley
It was the most beautiful valley you ever saw in your life - filled with beautiful white pine mixed in with red pine," Klett said. "To see all the logs piled up to the sky, well, it's just a shame." But conservancy officials say the clear-cutting will help beautify, not destroy, what they call the Stagecoach Prairies Natural Area. The area is being restored to what it looked like in 1848, when surveyors described it as "first-rate rolling prairie," said Tara Kelly, director of ecological restoration for the conservancy.

Canada: Restoration project saves birds and wins award
"The Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Program is an outstanding example of how conservation groups, government and private land owners can find common ground and work together in the preservation of our province," said Paul McNair, executive director of the Land Trust Alliance, during the ceremony. The project resulted in over 560 hectares of open forest and grassland restoration.

US Gulf Coast: Restoration to Aid Oyster Fisheries Fight for Survival
Instead of shutting down oyster fisheries (and immediately throwing 20-30,000 people out of work), restoration offers a potential road to recovery. There have been lots of restoration efforts over the years. Governments, universities and environmental groups have worked to restore oyster reefs. National Wildlife Federation and state affiliate Alabama Wildlife Federation contributed $50,000 and $10,000, respectively to get the launch phase of the 100-1000 Project completed. The money will help 100-1000 restore previously destroyed habitat for oysters to settle, grow and build new reefs.
