Survey to gain insight into the field of ecological restoration - Closes March 8, 2011
As part of the Fulbright funded research I am carrying out at Cranfield University I am exploring some of the why and what questions about ecological restoration. In particular I am attempting to learn whether ecological restorationists working in various geographic areas around the world and in different ecosystems have the same goals for and attitudes towards ecological restoration.

Bringing a Non-profit to Life

Well here I am again with an Earth-shaking update (for those of you who don't know me well I am extremely humorous). Demeter Design is well on its way to non-profitdom. I am winging this (mostly, I am business savvy) and we will see how well (or poorly) I manage the ransition. More importantly I am documenting the transition so that anyone wishing to follow the same path has a bit of a road map.

Indonesia's Coastal Economy Is On The Biorocks

At the heart of this transformation is the application of a novel technological innovation known as Biorock for the creation of new coral reefs and fish habitats. The technology, developed by the late Prof. Wolf Hilbertz and his colleague Dr. Thomas Goreau of the Global Coral Reef Alliance, relies on low-voltage electricity to attract minerals through accretion to simple metal rebar structures placed in the water. The structures can be placed in a range of places because they're powered by a range of traditional and renewable electrical sources, including solar and experimental tidal and wave-generators.

Alaska's Ancient Rainforest: Why restoring the Tongass is good for everyone

In a new study, Hjerpe suggests an innovative management strategy for the globally unique Tongass that advances the ecological health of the region while creating forest restoration-based jobs that boost the economies of local communities. Hjerpe found that by restoring the forest and focusing timber extraction away from ancient trees and into younger second-growth forests, communities will actually enjoy better long-term impacts than with the current logging model.

Coastal & Marine Restoration

Washington: New agency would focus on Puget Sound restoration

Bills introduced in House and Senate committees call for a consolidation of corps administration from several agencies into the state Department of Ecology, with additional federal money to create about 150 new corps positions. In turn, a new branch of the Washington Conservation Corps would focus solely on cleanup and habitat restoration projects in troubled Puget Sound.

EU: Monitoring the restoration of coastal and estuarine ecosystems

One of the primary goals of the Water Framework Directive1 is to restore degraded habitats. However, without long-term monitoring data using reliable indicators of recovery, it is difficult to assess the recovery of an ecosystem. The study examined available evidence on the recovery of coastal and estuarine ecosystems as part of the EU WISER project2. From a review of current studies, it identified 51 long-term cases where actions have been taken to restore ecosystems affected by human pressures and medium or long-term monitoring of recovery has occurred. The case studies were on a range of different wildlife and from different geographical regions.

Mexico: Forest Restoration for Raptors in Veracruz

The article details Audubon's and ProNatura Veracruz's efforts to convince farmers to preserve forest along the coast. It's traditional for farmers to run cattle and grow sugarcane in the area, but the recent drought has made those businesses less profitable. Some locals have decided that restoring the forest with government help and then letting people hunt on their land may be better choices.

Hawaiian Native Species Now Deemed 'Invasive' by State Land Department

The Department of Land and Natural Resources Office of Conservation and Coastal Lands (DLNR OCCL) is proposing new Administrative Rules for chapter 13-5 to make it easier to kill anything you don't like on any of the 2,000,000 acres of conservation lands statewide.
