Louisiana: Coastal restoration effort needs team of plant experts
Borrowing a page from firefighting strategy, the federal-state Breaux Act coastal restoration program is considering creating a "flying squad" of plant experts to swoop into areas damaged by hurricanes and storms to immediately replant wetland grasses and trees. The Coastwide Planting Project also would be used to restore vegetation along the state's coastline as other restoration projects are completed, or to beef up barrier islands or stretches of coastal wetlands. http://tammanyrealestate.com/news/coastal-restoration-effort-needs-team-of-plant-experts-breaux-act-panel-says/
Texas: Habitat Restoration Plant Party
Join Artist Boat and Habitat Stewardship Coordinator, Nicole Ekstrom, in moving coastal prairie plants as part of the Habitat Restoration Adventure program. Plants are great at providing oxygen and, but they haven't quite got the driving/walking down, so we need as many able hands and wheels as possible! RSVP by ASAP and join us for food and fun when the work is done! http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=103137076388514&index=1
The curriculum is wet, green, outside walls
For the past five years, seventh-grade students at the Ellicott City school have worked on an environmental restoration project at the stream behind the school. This year, they were recognized for their hard work. The Environmental Protection Agency awarded Dunloggin the 2009 President's Environmental Youth Award for the middle school level in the mid-Atlantic region, making it the top middle school in an area that encompasses five states and the District of Columbia. http://www.explorehoward.com/education/70936/curriculum-wet-green-outside-walls/

Forest restoration in a mixed-ownership landscape under climate change
The extent to which current landscapes deviate from the historical range of natural variability (RNV) is a common means of defining and ranking regional conservation targets. However, climate-induced shifts in forest composition may render obsolete restoration strategies and conservation targets based on historic climate conditions and disturbance regimes. We used a spatially explicit forest ecosystem model, LANDIS-II, to simulate the interaction of climate change and forest management in northeastern Minnesota, USA. We assessed the relevance of restoration strategies and conservation targets based on the RNV in the context of future climate change. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20405791?dopt=Abstractplus
The politics of urban nature restoration: The case of Cheonggyecheon restoration in Seoul, Korea
This paper is a critical analysis of the political conflicts behind the restoration of the urban stream called 'Cheonggyecheon' in Seoul. The conflicts arose between the Seoul City government and the coalition of NGOs around different ideologies of nature: environmental managerialism vs. deep ecologism. http://liverpool.metapress.com/content/n447668048n74w27/

Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)
How much are the ecosystems of New Jersey worth to society? The ecosystems of New Jersey may not receive as much media attention as the reality television shows and corrupt politicians that have besmirched the state's good name. But as a new study in the journal Environmental Management indicates, the ecosystems of the state are extremely important and provide society with services potentially worth as much as $20 billion per year. http://www.conservationmaven.com/frontpage/how-much-are-the-ecosystems-of-new-jersey-worth-to-society.html |

Rannerberger said 532 million shillings will go directly into the conservation of Mau forest complex while 26 million shillings will be given to the ministry of lands to help in survey and demarcation of the South Western Mau and Trans-Mara forest reserves. http://www.kbc.co.ke/story.asp?ID=63520
India: Forest Rights Act aims green-cover restorationConservationists fear that Forest Rights Act (FRA) may become a doom for green-cover, but Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh feels that it opens up an opportunity to create a new fort for forestry restoration in the country. "Generally forestry establishment (and green groups) in the country has a perception that the FRA is a threat to the forestry preservation. http://www.indianexpress.com/news/forest-rights-act-aims-greencover-restoration-ramesh/608408/ |
Wetland Restoration
Video: Restoration of Magnolia Marsh, A NOAA Recovery Act Project
In 2009, NOAA provided $3.3 million in Recovery Act funding to the Huntington Beach Wetlands Conservancy to restore tidal flow at the Magnolia Marsh Wetland. Today, a year later, the ocean is successfully reconnected to the wetland and bringing back important nursery habitat for many fish, including California halibut. This video tells the story of this project and the importance of taking care of our wetlands, before they disappear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpxeyK994ZE&feature=youtube_gdata
Illinois: Restoring a wetland in area of wet land
The Tinley Creek Wetland Restoration Project is going to cost about $4.5 million and take about five years to complete. Forest preserve district spokesman Steve Mayberry was quick to point out that not a dime of that is coming from Cook County. The money is coming from an O'Hare International Airport expansion mitigation fund, meaning that wetlands taken to expand the airport had to be replaced elsewhere under federal law. http://www.southtownstar.com/news/kadner/2182248,042110kadner.article
Missouri: Restoring the Processes - Wetland Restoration at Timberhil
Five years ago Bill and I purchased land that we call our West Creek unit. Except for two small cornfields the property had never been plowed. The rest was degraded prairie and sedge meadow heavily overgrown with honey locust and eastern red cedar trees. These trees also filled a large ravine that cut the unit in half. Severely eroded by water that ran off from corn fields north of the ravine its only redeeming feature was a small patch of sedge and prairie cord grass wetland at the bottom. Stopping the erosional run and enlarging the small wetland became our highest restoration priorities in this unit. http://timberhilloaksavanna.com/blog/?p=39 |

Pennsylvania: Whitemarsh meadow a model of restoration
An ongoing effort to restore a native grassland meadow in Whitemarsh Township has earned a 2009 Quality Vegetation Management Project Habitat Award from BASF Professional Vegetation Management. PECO, Native Return LLC and Weeds Inc. won the national award for their combined restoration efforts on a 20-acre right-of-way corridor. The site is located between Harts Lane and Manor Road and parallel to the Schuylkill River Trail in the Lafayette Hill section of Whitemarsh Township. http://www.montgomerynews.com/articles/2010/04/22/colonial_news/news/doc4bd0aaada3e06173688459.txt |
Grassland Restoration
Missouri: Grand River Grasslands Conservation Area Expands to Include 685 Additional Acres
The Nature Conservancy recently acquired 685 acres for restoration and protection located within the Grand River Grasslands, a 70,000-acre prairie restoration landscape that straddles the Missouri-Iowa border. The Grand River Grasslands remains the only known opportunity to restore and conserve a functional tallgrass prairie system on deep loamy soils in the Central Tallgrass Ecoregion, a region spanning six Midwest states. http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/missouri/press/grandriver_arch.html |

Jamaica: Blue Lagoon Heritage Concept PlanThere is no better time for action than now, and the Blue Lagoon Summit of 2010 proposes to be a stepping stone to sustainable development and the continued preservation of a Jamaican national treasure. There are two major resources which will be needed from concerned stakeholders to drive action and not have this process stall or result in another detailed proposal with nothing resulting from it. http://bluelagoonjamaica.blogspot.com/2010/04/blue-lagoon-heritage-concept-plan.html |
Coastal & Marine Restoration
California: Bill to fund efforts to restore bay's wetlands
A 20-year wish list of San Francisco Bay wetlands restoration projects would finally receive funding under a $1 billion federal bill introduced by a Bay Area congresswoman. The San Francisco Bay Improvement Act of 2010 by Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Hillsborough, would fund the restoration of thousands of acres of bay marshes that were filled in or destroyed by levees and other projects in the last century. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/04/22/MN4O1D2VOC.DTL
Florida: Stevenson Creek Estuary to be Restored
The project includes removing approximately 100,000 cubic yards of sediment that has accumulated in the estuary and the creek's floor will be taken down two to three feet in middle and tapering out to the existing banks. Accumulated sediment will be removed, and 3.2 acres of mangroves will be planted after the project is complete. These enhancements will restore the creek to an improved, healthier environmental ecosystem. http://theclearwatercurrent.blogspot.com/2010/04/stevenson-creek-estuary-to-be-restored.html |
