Canadian prairie wetlands undergoing widespread degradation
Now, in one of the first efforts of its kind, biologists have quantitatively assessed the status of Canadian wetlands on a large scale. Their findings indicate that high levels of impact combined with low recovery "clearly demonstrate the need for stronger wetland protection in prairie Canada." The study, published in Ecological Applications, followed trends of some 10,500 wetlands between 1985 and 2005 in the southern portions of the three Canadian prairie provinces: Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. http://www.conservationmaven.com/frontpage/canadian-prairie-wetlands-undergoing-widespread-degradation.html
Restoration of Lakes, Streams, Floodplains, and Bogs in Europe
Despite our growing awareness of the vital role they play in the global environment, wetlands remain among the most endangered ecosystems on Earth and are still being destroyed and degraded at an alarming rate. This much-needed publication, which includes contributions from leading researchers and practitioners, presents a holistic perspective on the restoration of wetland ecosystems such as shallow lakes, streams, floodplains and bogs. Through the use of carefully chosen case studies, the authors examine European wetland restoration projects from Scandinavia to Bulgaria and from Ireland to Belarus, focusing on the lessons they can teach to a new generation of conservationists. http://www.springer.com/life+sciences/ecology/book/978-90-481-9264-9 |

Wetland Restoration
Florida: Upper St. Johns River Basin
The Upper St. Johns River Basin Project - one of the largest and most ambitious wetland restoration projects in the world - is giving new life to the river's headwaters. The design of the project is on the cutting edge of environmental restoration technology. The project demonstrates a new level of compatibility between flood control and environmental protection. It shows that working with nature is often preferred to working against her. It also shows how two agencies have joined together to give nature a second chance. http://floridaswater.com/upperstjohnsriver/index.html
California: Oakley wetland restoration passes final hurdle
After years of planning and months of public comment, the Delta's first wetlands-restoration project has cleared its final bureaucratic hurdle. The state Department of Water Resources has approved the environmental impact report for the Dutch Slough Tidal Marsh restoration project in Oakley, and hired a contractor to draw up preliminary plans. In the coming years, the project will turn 1,166 acres of former cattle grazing and dairy operations at the northern end of Cellars Road into freshwater tidal marshland. http://www.contracostatimes.com/environment/ci_14812981
Everglades Coalition works to restore, protect 2-million-acre wetland ecosystem in Florida
Ten years after the largest ecosystem restoration project in our nation's history was approved, the Everglades Coalition, which includes a Hollywood-based conservation organization, is leading the charge for continued progress in saving Florida's unique environmental treasure. The Everglades Coalition is an alliance of 53 national, state and local conservation and environmental organizations - including the Sun Coast Regional Office of the National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) in Hollywood - that advocates for the restoration, protection and enhancement of the series of rivers, lakes and estuaries that comprise the Everglades. http://www.hollywoodgazette.com/2009/latest/595-everglades-coalition-works-to-restore-protect-2-million-acre-wetland-ecosystem-in-florida |
River & Watershed Restoration
New York: Sheldrake River Restoration
GEE was hired by Westchester County to design the restoration of degraded stream banks of the Sheldrake River as it passes through Bonnie Briar Golf Course. The existing stream banks were steep and planted with turf, which allowed fertilizer and pesticides to enter the stream. In response, GEE regraded the slopes and created two large floodplain areas. The banks and floodplains were planted with a mixture of riparian species. In addition, in-stream rock structures were constructed to enhance the stream bed. http://www.greatecologyandenvironments.com/sheldrake-river-restoration/ |

Canada: East Kootenay prescribed burns planned in April
The Rocky Mountain Trench Ecosystem Restoration Program is planning to conduct three prescribed burns in the East Kootenay in the month of April, weather conditions permitting. The Portland River Plan: Meeting our vision for the North Reach
The river plan acknowledges the tremendous success we've seen in our working harbor and seeks to ensure that it continues to prosper through key investments in industry-supporting infrastructure. The plan identifies key "pearl" sites for focused environmental restoration, and it seeks to connect these sites through a string of natural resource areas to be protected -- or developed -- up and down the North Reach. http://www.oregonlive.com/opinion/index.ssf/2010/04/the_portland_river_plan_meetin.html |
