Attention SER Members
In 1981, the journal Ecological Restoration broke new ground with writings about the work of restoring the environment when William Jordan III began publishing Restoration & Management and Notes.  The history of this journal, which is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and published by University of Wisconsin Press, thus tracks the emergence of the science and practice of ecological restoration.  This history has just been made available online (previously only issues since 2002 were digitized), thanks in part to a gift from funds provided by the Society for Ecological Restoration International in memory of Katherine Louise Schuetz Jordan and William R. Jordan, Jr.  This gift recognizes the legacy of Mrs. Jordan, who taught English for many years at both high school and college levels, and Mr. Jordan, who was a forester with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources from 1949-1978. Mr. and Mrs. Jordan were the parents of William R. Jordan III, a founding member of the Society. The back issues are accessible through the Ecological Restoration website (http://er.uwpress.org/) along with the currently available content published since 2001.

Umea University New Project: RESTORE: Ecosystem restoration in policy and practice: restore, develop, adapt
The objective of this collaborative cross-disciplinary project is to analyse how ecological and political incentives interact in ecosystem restoration design. We will examine restoration measures in ecosystems and link those to societal actors' interests and institutional structures. Often, societal actors have human-centered aims for restoration projects based on particular expertise and interests. Little is known about outcomes of these projects and whether biodiversity and ecosystem services are favoured or disfavoured.

US Fish and Wildlife Chief Dies After Skiing
The 30-year veteran of the agency, who assumed its top post in September, died in the afternoon after being transported off the Keystone Ski Area, said Joanne Richardson, Summit County coroner. She said his death was consistent with an underlying heart problem. Hamilton helped lead restoration work in the Everglades, the largest ecosystem restoration project in the country. He oversaw the extensive recovery and restoration efforts required following hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which devastated coastal wetlands, wildlife refuges and other wildlife habitat along the Gulf of Mexico.

Using Florida Keys Reference Sites As a Standard for Restoration
Subject to the same caveats that apply to off-site references elsewhere, structural information from mature Keys hammocks can be helpful in planning and implementing forest restoration in Everglades tree islands. In many of these islands, such restoration might involve supplementing tree stocking by planting native trees to produce more complete site utilization and a more open understory.

Building Local Community Commitment to Wetlands Restoration
This study explores the social construction of wetlands locally, and community members' perceptions of the wetland restoration project in the Cache River Watershed of southern Illinois, where public and private agencies have partnered together to implement a large-scale wetlands restoration project. Findings illustrate that the wetlands hold diverse and significant meanings to community members and that community members' criteria for project success may vary from those identified by project managers. The case study provides managers with strategies for building community commitment such as engaging local citizens in project planning, minimizing local burdens, maximizing local benefits, and reducing uncertainty.

Soil bioengineering for risk mitigation and environmental restoration in a humid tropical area
The use of soil bio-engineering techniques in developing countries is a relevant issue for disaster mitigation, environmental restoration and poverty reduction. Research on the autochthonal plants suitable for these kinds of interventions and on the economic efficiency of the interventions is essential for the dissemination of such techniques. The present paper is focused on these two issues as related to the realization of various typologies of soil bioengineering works in the humid tropics of Nicaragua.

An Assessment of Urban Lakeshore Restorations in Minnesota
This survey suggests two restoration practices that should be improved to increase the likelihood of lakeshore restoration success: 1) choosing plants so they match the prevailing light and flooding conditions within sites; and 2) providing both upland and aquatic protection.

Thailand: Wet Wonders
In Thailand, intact mangroves are valued at US$1,000 (RM3,410) per ha based on the sale of mangrove fish and the additional value of non-marketed services such as storm protection and the sequestration of carbon. On the other hand, if the mangroves are converted to shrimp farms, their worth plunges to only US$200 per ha.

Biodiversity & Climate Change

Brazil forest restoration project first in country to be certified by CCB
A reforestation project in Brazil's highly endangered coastal Atlantic Forest has become the first in the country to be validated by the Climate, Community and Biodiversity Alliance as a carbon project. The CCB is considered the most important international alliance for third-party validation of carbon sequestration projects, and certification implies the project is set to mitigate climate change, support sustainable development, and conserve biodiversity at the same time.

Wetland Restoration

The Plain of Reeds Wetland Restoration Project
The Plain of Reeds Wetland Restoration Project (POR) is demonstrating an adaptive, science-based approach to the management of protected wetland areas in Vietnam.  This is a step in the right direction as the same management approaches have historically been applied to all Vietnamese national parks, sometimes with dire consequences for protected areas.

A Decade On, Lower Danube Exceeds Green Corridor Targets
A decade after four governments agreed to work together to establish a "green corridor" along the entire length of the Lower Danube River, Europe's most ambitious wetland protection and restoration programme is well ahead of targets for creating protected areas. The Lower Danube Green Corridor Declaration, signed by environment ministers of Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and Moldova in 2000, pledged to boost protection for 775,000 ha of existing protected areas and bring another 160,000 ha under protection along the river's final 1000 kilometres.

Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Action Plan
U.S. President Barack Obama and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Lisa Jackson, in collaboration with 15 other federal agencies, have made restoring the Great Lakes a national priority. This Action Plan describes how the Initiative will be executed from 2010 through 2014.
