In 1981, the journal Ecological Restoration broke new ground with writings about the work of restoring the environment when William Jordan III began publishing Restoration & Management and Notes. The history of this journal, which is sponsored by the University of Wisconsin Arboretum and published by University of Wisconsin Press, thus tracks the emergence of the science and practice of ecological restoration. This history has just been made available online (previously only issues since 2002 were digitized), thanks in part to a gift from funds provided by the Society for Ecological Restoration International in memory of Katherine Louise Schuetz Jordan and William R. Jordan, Jr. This gift recognizes the legacy of Mrs. Jordan, who taught English for many years at both high school and college levels, and Mr. Jordan, who was a forester with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources from 1949-1978. Mr. and Mrs. Jordan were the parents of William R. Jordan III, a founding member of the Society. The back issues are accessible through the Ecological Restoration website ( http://er.uwpress.org/) along with the currently available content published since 2001.

US: Restored Prairies Resist Non-Native Grasses A team of researchers from the University of Wisconsin, led by John C. Stier, investigated the ability of turfgrasses to compete against established prairie vegetation. Ten different species of turfgrass were transplanted into two restored prairie sites in Wisconsin. Colonies of non-native turfgrasses either declined in size or remained constant in size over two years. One native turfgrass colony tripled in size. The results demonstrate an inability of non-native species to compete in established prairies. The study was published in the January-February 2010 edition of Crop Science. http://www.newswise.com/articles/restored-prairies-resist-non-native-grasses |
Restoring Natural Capital (RNC)
Putting a Value on Nature Could Set Scene for True Green Economy Much environmental damage has been caused by the way we do business. Is there a way of changing our economic models from being part of the problem into part of the solution? http://www.commondreams.org/headline/2010/02/10-3 |
Agro-Ecology
A Review of Vegetated Buffer Efficacy Agricultural nonpoint source pollution has been listed as one of the leading sources of pollution in rivers and water bodies throughout the world. Environmental regulators and scientists are making concerted efforts to reduce these pollutions using mitigation tools called best management practices (BMPs). As promising and effective BMPs, vegetated buffers are gradually gaining in popularity. However, lack of quantification on their mitigation efficacies limits their implementation in agricultural fields to reduce nonpoint source pollutions. https://www.agronomy.org/news-media/releases/2010/0215/324/ |
Biodiversity & Climate Change
Peatlands juggle with carbon dioxide and methane, global warming wins the contribution of peatlands to fluctuation in atmospheric content of carbon and methane has long been a matter of debate. How seriously should they be taken in the context of global warming? Peat bogs sequester vast amounts of carbon by preventing plant material from decaying in the presence of oxygen. A byproduct of this is methane. So while the bogs take care of the carbon, they blast methane into the atmosphere. http://www.downtoearth.org.in/full6.asp?foldername=20100228&filename=sci&sec_id=12&sid=1
'Rewilding' the World: A Bright Spot for Biodiversity As burgeoning human populations place greater pressure on wild areas, a strategy is emerging for preserving threatened lands and wildlife. Known as 'rewilding,' it involves expanding core wilderness areas, connecting them via corridors that allow humans and animals to co-exist, and protecting and reintroducing top predators. http://www.e360.yale.edu/content/feature.msp?id=2239 |
UK: Rare Species Recorded in Highlands Forest The charity said surveys had found the rare mining bee Andrena marginata, as well as water voles and pine martens. Trees for Life has been using wild boar in an effort to restore woodland. Executive director Alan Watson Featherstone said: "The discoveries being made at Dundreggan are confirming the estate's importance as a habitat rich in biodiversity and as a perfect site for forest restoration." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/scotland/highlands_and_islands/8513016.stm

Illinois: Wetland Restoration Project Underway at Messenger Woods The mitigation project, funded through the O'Hare Modernization Program and the Illinois State Highway Toll Authority, will entail a 90-acre habitat restoration in the Messenger Woods Nature Preserve, according to forest preserve officials. The piece of land was originally a wetland and grazing area that grew in over time, causing flooding problems for neighbors and marring the wildlife habitat of the area, according to Andrew Hawkins, superintendent of planning and development for Forest Preserve District of Will County. http://www.homerhorizon.com/Articles-c-2010-02-11-204492.114125_Wetland_restoration_project_underway_at_Messenger_Woods.html

India: A River Restoration Project - Destruction in the Name of Development Mr. T.K. Ramkumar, Advocate and Environmental Activist, expressed his concerns regarding the nature of these clean up initiatives by the government. He said that from past experience it is evident that any restoration plan or cleanup plan is always coupled with some other development plan. It is nothing but a dirty strategy to reclaim land and destroy urban slums to transform the waterways and their environs into high-end estate for commercial exploitation, posing threats to their sustainability in the long run. He called the entire state of affairs a 'social tragedy'. http://www.indiadevelopmentblog.com/2010/02/transportation-and-restoration-projects.html |

Desertification & Arid Land Restoration
38 Percent of World's Surface in Danger of Desertification "Despite improvements in the LCA, it has a methodological weakness, which is a lack of environmental impact categories to measure the effect of human activities such as cultivation or grazing on the soil", Montserrat Núñez, lead author and a researcher at the Institute of Agro Food Research and Technology (IRTA), tells SINC. http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2010-02/f-sf-3ow020910.php |
