Microfinance and the Adelante Foundation Mission
"Adelante" in English means "forward" or "progress."  Our mission is to improve the standard of living of the extreme poor in rural Honduras. To do that, we provide very poor women with the opportunity they so desperately seek, so as to build a better life for themselves and their families. We do this through a lending model called microfinance.

We would like you to meet....

leyla lorenzoLeyla Lorenzo of El Camaco, Intibuca.  She is a single mother of two boys, ten and eleven years of age and is also the surrogate mother of her young niece, picture with her here.  Leyla has been an Adelante client for five years and is currently on her eighth loan cycle.  she makes and sells sweet breads.  When she started she had to borrow baking equipment, but over the years she has steadily invested her loans into improving her business.  She now has a seperate kitchen, her own equipment and an "ecological oven" where she bakes her breads.
Leyla begins baking early in the morning while her children are in school.   Then, in the afternoon while she is out selling her sweet breads door to door, her children stay at home doing their homework.  Like all mothers, she wants to see her children have a better life than what she has had and she is thankful to Adelante for helping her to make that possible.
Thanks to the increased income, she has been able to put her children through elementary school, replace her dirt floor with cement and install potable water in her home.  Her goal now is to plaster and paint her home.  Little by little, Leyla's family's life has improved.  Of Adelante, she says, "I am pleased with the business I have created with Adelante's help.  My earnings have allowed me to support my family."

Women's Global Network

This month, the Adelante Foundation has been honored with many visits from the United States.  One of these was from Women's Global Network (WGN).  WGN (www.wgn-global.com) had its Global Immersion Trip to Intibuca, Honduras this past week.  WGN is a community of business women who support organizations that provide business and education opportunities for impoverished women all over the world.  These trips have two goals: to promote understanding of different cultures aimed at building respectful collaborative relationships across the globe;  and to provide grassroots education for women around the world as a means of promoting women's leadership and community development.

They visited various assemblies in the rural communities near La Esperanza, Intibuca and got to share business ideas and suggestions with Adelante clients.  For example, Beverly Seffel, an Avon sales representative in the U.S., got to meet and share business advice with Karen Gomez, an Avon sales representative in Honduras.  It was a great experience for both WGN members and Adelante clients.
