Update from Court on our jouney of

faith, love, and healing - Urgent needs for our Christian brethren in the Philippines and Nigeria.

"Praise the LORD, O my soul;

all my inmost being, praise his holy name.

Praise the LORD, O my soul,

and forget not all his benefits--

who forgives all your sins

and heals all your diseases,

who redeems your life from the pit

and crowns you with love and compassion,

who satisfies your desires with good things

so that your youth is renewed

like the eagle's."

Psalm 103:1-5

Dear Brethren

Update from Court on his treatment for esophageal cancer

Sandy and I are so thankful for the prayers, love, and encouragement we have received from so many of you. Truly we have felt carried by the arms of our Lord Jesus Christ through the prayers of God's people here in America and around the world. We have felt "peace that passes understanding" in preparation for treatment, and during treatment the past 24 days since we last wrote to you all.

Thursday, December 15, Sandy and I drove to Charlottesville, VA and on Friday morning I was admitted to UVA Hospital to have my surgeon place a feeding tube in my intestine to assure good nutrition when I would not be able to swallow food, and a port in my upper left chest to facilitate easy and painless access for chemotherapy and any injections needed for my treatment over the next five months. I was in the hospital for two days, and we began to experience the extraordinary grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that has continued to this day.

We were released from the hospital early afternoon and arrived home 5 hrs later at 9 PM Sunday night. At 8 AM the next day, December 19, I entered the hospital hear in Bristol for my first 5 day round of chemotherapy, and the beginning of daily radiation that continues for 5 weeks, 5 days a week.

The five days of chemotherapy I received in the hospital beginning December 19 were very challenging physically, but as poorly as I felt, I was amazed at the strength that the Holy Spirit instilled in me. The moment anyone would enter my room for any reason, whether it was a doctor, nurse, a cleaning lady, or a hospital volunteer, I found myself reaching out to them with great encouragement in our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord gave me a great appreciation for all the hospital team and I would pray for them, bless them and tell them they are the hands and hearts of Jesus bringing life, comfort, and healing to all their patients. Amazingly, all my doctors here are godly Christians, and almost all the nurses and staff are Christians. But I found that many needed encouragement, and many were going through trials and persecutions in their own lives. In my weakness, our Lord enabled me to greatly encourage all these dear saints. On the window ledge of my hospital room I had wonderful Christian books titled "The Survival Series" by my close friend Clay Sterrett, brochures about In Jesus' Name Ministries, gospel tracts and booklets, and articles I have written over the years. Nurses and doctors and staff would eagerly take these as gift's from Sandy and me "in Jesus' name," as expressions of our and God's love for them.

In the room next to mine was a precious young Christian mother, Joy, who has two young children, and a devoted husband, Andy. Joy had received emergency surgery in October for a brain tumor and is struggling to recover. Andy came into my room and we became bound together in our Lord as Sandy and I began to pray for Joy and Andy, and as Andy prayed for us. If you have Facebook, please take a few minutes to visit Joy's page that has been established for her, to rally prayer for Joy and Andy and their precious children. In Facebook, search for Joy Lowe Recovery Page.

I was released to come home on Saturday, December 24, Christmas Eve. I did not feel well. We assumed my extreme weakness and discomfort was from the chemotherapy and radiation, and this was the low point of my emotions. By Wednesday, the 28th, I really did not think I had strength to continue, and seeing the strain on Sandy, even thought briefly that perhaps hospice care would be a better direction, since death for a Christian is not a fearful prospect. What we did not realize was that other factors were bringing me to such physical desperation. At 11 PM Wednesday night we called my oncologist, and after describing my symptoms we were told to go immediately to the emergency room which was 10 minutes away. We should have called 911 but not realizing how sick I was I had Sandy drive me. When we arrived at the ambulance entrance I was too weak to get out of the car, so Sandy had one of the paramedics bring a wheel chair to the car. The ER staff immediately responded to my need for treatment and rushed me to a room for examination. They were wonderful. Within 30 minutes a blood test revealed that my potassium level was critically low and they began an IV with potassium. A cat scan of my abdomen revealed also that I had a severely blocked small intestine which they immediately began steps to remedy.

Within a few hours I was a new man and realized that my despairing symptoms were not due to the chemotherapy, but rather because of other treatable conditions working against me in my body. I knew I was going to be ok and, with the Lord's help, I would be able to handle the second round of chemotherapy coming up in a few weeks. I remained in the hospital 7 days as these issues and an infection around my feeding tube were treated and healed by our Lord, and by His servants, the doctors and nurses. During this second time in the hospital I again felt so much peace and encouragement from the Holy Spirit and from the Word of God. Again, I found myself ministering to everyone entering my room. I was so grateful for the care and love I received from the entire hospital staff. Again Sandy brought to my room Clay's wonderful books for the saints, brochures, articles and gospel literature to share. By the grace of God we were able to "redeem the time" to His glory.

On Wednesday, January 4, I returned home and the past ten days have been truly wonderful. Each day I have felt more strength and I have been working more and more in our office, and with my laptop from my easy chair in the living room. Sandy has been truly wonderful in caring for me. Our dear son in Christ David, from Pakistan, who some of you know, just left to return home to his family after being with us for six days. It was such a comfort to have him with us for fellowship and he did so many practical tasks to lift the burdens of both Sandy and myself. Our neighbors and members of Christ's Body from our Bristol area have also been so supportive in helping us.

Your prayers and love will be especially needed and appreciated from this Monday, January 16 (Sandy's birthday) and for the following two weeks. On Monday I will be re-admitted to the hospital here for 5 days of in hospital chemotherapy. This is a challenging time physically and emotionally. When I come home on the 21st, please pray that it will not be many days before my body overcomes the effects of the chemotherapy. By the end of this month I should be totally finished with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. I will then wait for 8-10 weeks in preparation for surgery during which time I will be making every effort to strengthen my body with proper nutrition and exercise. Please pray that, as the doctors predict, I will be able to again eat normally, and get back to exercise, as we continue the work of In Jesus' Name Ministries.

They need our love and help.

Your continued financial giving bringing comfort and help to the Body of Christ worldwide, and your help in supporting the work of In Jesus' Name Ministries, is what gives us such encouragement and strength to continue to be a voice for the Lord and His people. Please take careful note of the photos from the terrible flood that swept through the town of Cagayan de Oro where our principle help to the Philippines is directed. I personally know many of the Christian families who lost their lives, homes, and family members in the flash flooding. Alex, our main contact in that area is distributing any assistance you are able to send. Because Alex was already in touch with some of you, several days ago we were able to wire initial help to bring comfort and aid to our brethren there. Much more help is needed.

Our Christian brethren in Nigeria also urgently need your help. They were again recently devastated by Muslim attacks on churches and Christian homes, killing hundreds of believers. The entire country is presently shut down with all the airports closed. Our dear brother Bright will be leaving for Nigeria, as soon as the airports reopen, to bring your gifts of love to our persecuted Nigerian brethren. Please help if you can. You may recall seeing news reports concerning these sufferings and persecutions of the Body of Christ a few weeks ago. Because of my hospitalizations I have been delayed in relaying these urgent needs to you.

Please recall that the principle commands of New Testament giving are for us to "lay down our lives for out brethren" by helping our brethren (fellow Christians) in their need (1 John 3:16-19). We are commanded to "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2. And as we help our fellow believers, we are actually helping our Lord Jesus Christ who lives in them. Will He say to us "when He comes in His glory, and all His angels are with Him," "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me." Matthew 25:34-36 "I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." Matthew 25:40

Those of you who are able to help, know that we forward our brethren 100% of all gifts designated for them.

Remember the words of the Apostle Paul when he was writing to encourage the saints to help their fellow believers:

"This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" 2 Corinthians 9:12-15

Sadly, because most American churches teach giving under the law, these commands, so central to the New Covenant established by our Lord, are rarely mentioned, or they are applied out of context.

I would like to say that the wonderful Body of believers we worship with here in the Bristol area, which has a sizable attendance each week numbering in the thousands, does not take any offering, with the teaching elder only mentioning giving about once a month by briefly reminding those attending that there are offering boxes on the walls of the worship area if anyone would be in a position to help with the expenses and missions of the church. Without our being placed back under the law in our giving, with no emphasis or requirement to tithe, our church is debt free, growing, expanding its facilities, and giving generously to missions.

The reason that giving increases when people are released from the bondage of the law is explained by Paul in his letter to the believers in Rome: "But now we have been released from the law, for we died to it and are no longer captive to its power. Now we can serve God, not in the old way of obeying the letter of the law, but in the new way of living in the Spirit." Romans 7:6

To believers being brought back under the law in the church in Galatia, by men Paul had nothing but contempt for, Paul wrote:

"You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Have you suffered so much for nothing--if it really was for nothing? Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?" Galatians 3:1-5 "All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: 'Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.'" Galatians 3:10 "Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law." Galatians 3:25 "It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1 "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." Galatians 5:6 "You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Galatians 5:13-14

Brethren, I encourage you to read the entire epistle of Paul's letter to the church at Galatia. Keep in mind that the practice of both tithing and circumcision are clearly rooted in the law of Moses and the Old Covenant (Testament). The reason this is so important is that the popular introduction and practice of this element of the law (tithing) in the American church is preventing us from seeing the "sufferings of Christ" in the "living temple," the "Body of Christ," throughout the world; and our clear New Covenant responsibility to help our brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ. Furthermore, placing believers under the law in their giving actually stifles giving (average giving in American churches is less than 3%). We are not meant to give with a calculator, but rather:

"Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: 'He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.' Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God." 2 Corinthians 9:7-11

"Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Galatians 6:10

What a great blessing would come to our American churches if we would begin to open our eyes to the sufferings of the Body of Christ around the world. If Pastors would start informing their congregations of the great needs our brethren have, their congregations would instinctively want to begin regular "collections for God's people." 1Cor 16:1  Then our Lord's repeated command for us "to love one another," and his prayer that we would be "brought to complete unity" would be fulfilled. "May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me." John 17:23

"We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit,

whom God has given to those who obey him." Acts 5:32

"Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me.

He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." Our Lord Jesus Christ as reported by John chapter 14 verse 21.

I want to conclude with the verses of a beautiful song of praise and worship I was listening to a few nights ago, in the early morning hours. It is a song written by Charles Billingsly.

What a joy to serve my King,

walk the path of suffering,

whether free or bound in chains,

I will spread your fame.

There are hearts inside these walls.

Spirit you have heard them call.

You have sent me to this place,

a prisoner of Your grace.

So pour me out like sweet perfume,

there are souls in need of You.

And have Your way, Oh Christ in me,

for I serve at the pleasure of my King.

Though my path is filled with thorns,

I delight in You my Lord.

For your Word has been my light,

shinning through and bright.

It's for love You brought me here,

and there is nothing that I fear.

For in death or in my life,

You will be glorified.

So pour me out like sweet perfume,

there are souls in need of You.

And have Your way, Oh Christ in me,

so I serve at the pleasure of my King.

Not my will but Yours be done

Here on earth your Kingdom come.

So pour me out like sweet perfume,

there are souls in need of You.

And have Your way, Oh Christ in me,

so I serve at the pleasure of my King.

So pour me out like sweet perfume,

there are souls in need of You.

And have Your way, Oh Christ in me,

so I serve at the pleasure of my King.

For I serve at the pleasure of my King.

So gratefully slaves of our Lord Jesus Christ, and your stewards,
