| OYM Tip - Achieving Your Financial Goals
Millions of people have been setting goals as we begin the new year. However, millions are actually creating goals they will never achieve! Why is that?
I go into many of the pitfalls and alternative effective strategies in our new CD system INVEST IN YOURSELF, and I'll share 3 quick tips with you now:
- Inspire yourself. Without getting in touch with your Inspiration, you just won't do it. So start with determining "why" you actually want to achieve each goal. How do you want to feel? What will you have once you achieve this goal? Why bother anyway?
- Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T. Just like we use S.M.A.R.T. goals in the workplace, we can use them to set effective personal finance goals too. So make sure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-bound. For example, "Save more money" fails several categories, but "Save an additional $100/month starting February 1st for a total savings of $1100 by December 31, 2010" works.
- Know what usually gets in your way. What will make a difference to you this time so you actually achieve the goals, instead of just creating more unfulfilled promises? Do you fail to prioritize or allocate time each week or month? (Start using "money dates".) Are you painfully serious about it so just the thought of spending time on your finances has your whole body tense up? (Instead, make it fun.) Do you work better with accountability, i.e. you get more done when you have to report in to someone with your results? (Hire a coach or get a "money buddy" for a few months to help you get everything in order.) Once you are honest with yourself, you can create strategies to work through your previous limitati
 ons.
Once you start achieving--not just setting--your financial goals, you will be amazed at your ability to let go of your anxiety and feel fantastic about how you are owning your money...and your life.
