Prepare Your Home Against Intruders for National Preparedness Month.

Don't be a victim.September is National Preparedness Month, and although the goal is to focus on preparing for a natural disaster or terrorism, we at Handyman Matters also want to provide tips for preparing your home against intruders.

Follow these tips to protect your home and family:

  • Layer your home security system.  Don't just settle on a single line of defense.  Thorny rosebushes in front of double locked and barred windows is a great example of layering your defenses.
  • Don't overlook the security value of good exterior lighting, but be sure to replace burned out lights immediately.  The whole lighting system becomes ineffective if burned out light bulbs are not quickly replaced.
  • Every six months or so, inspect your home as though you've been locked out without your keys.  How would you get in?  If you can get in, so can a thief.
  • A lock is not enough.  Consider the area surrounding the lock as well.  A pinewood door frame, the most common used for exterior doors, will splinter and  break with a few kicks.  Consider installing a heavy duty high security strike plate.  HMM recommends the Strike Master II strike plate.
  • Protect all locks and their components.  On ALL outside exit doors buy locks  with  locking tongues.  This can be tested by holding the door open and locking the knob.  Try to depress the tongue with your finger. If it can be pushed in the lock could easily be jimmied. If you find your locks are insufficient, give us a call.  We will be happy to Sometimes a good lock does not mean a safe home.replace them for you.
  • Put window stops on all first floor and basement window frames.  The best kind go through a moveable frame and lock in place.
  • Install motion detectors in areas where people should NOT be.  It is ineffective to put the lights only on the front porch.  More likely than not if triggered the lights will not be seen.  Instead install them on the sides and the back of the home, and arrange the light so they will catch your attention if activated.
