Protect yourself during severe weather:
-
Do not stand under or near an isolated tree or small group of trees. -
Stay off all bodies of water. -
If you're inside a hardtop vehicle, stay inside. This is one of the safest places to be in a thunderstorm. - Do not shower or bathe during a thunderstorm. Lightning can feed back into the plumbing system.
- Do not use a land line telephone except in emergencies.
Tornado:
- Go to the basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, like a closet or bathroom.
-
Wrap yourself in blankets and overcoats to protect against flying debris. -
If in a mobile home, seek substantial shelter immediately. If none is available, lie flat in the nearest ditch and cover your face.
Flash Flood:
- Do not allow children to play around streams, drainage ditches or viaducts!
- Do not drive through flooded areas, even if it looks shallow enough to cross. Two feet of water can easily carry away most automobiles.
