New EPA Lead Safe Regulations could affect the cost of your next project.
|
As you may know, lead based paint was commonly used in homes built prior to 1978. Common renovations such as sanding, cutting and demolition can create hazardous lead paint dust. Lead is especially dangerous to children under six, causing reduced IQ and learning disabilities.
Because of this danger, the EPA has issued a new rule requiring the use of lead-safe practices. This rule will be implemented beginning April, 2010, and will have a profound impact on the construction industry.
The new regulations will require all contractors to be certified in lead safe practices if the contractor performs work on homes built prior to 1978.
Beyond the cost of certification, there will also be an increase in time and materials needed for each qualifying project to ensure compliance with EPA guidelines. Due to the added expenditure needed to comply with the regulations, many contractors will choose not to work on homes built prior to 1978.
At Handyman Matters, we put the safety of your family first. If your home was built prior to 1978 our craftsmen will allow you to decide which lead safe practices we use now. We will provide you with a checklist of lead safe recommendations and you will determine what recommendations we follow.
If your home falls into the lead based paint category, we encourage you to get your major renovations taken care of now. Remember, after April 2010 all practices will be required adding time and money to your project.
