Don't Be A Victim!
Protect Your Home From Burglars.
|
There is no such thing as a burglar proof home; however it is possible to make your home difficult to break into. The longer it takes for a burglar to enter and the more noise he makes, the less successful he will be.
Follow these tips to protect your home and family:
- Layer your home security system. Don't just settle on a single line of defense. Thorny rosebushes in front of double locked and barred windows is a great example of layering your defenses.
- Pretend to be a burglar. Walk around your home and consider how you would break in. Look for blind spots and the most vulnerable areas of your home. Also look to see if your valuables are easily visible through your windows.
- A lock is not enough. Consider the area surrounding the lock as well. A pinewood door frame, the most common used for exterior doors, will splinter and break with a few kicks. Consider installing a heavier grade door that is not as easily broken. Handyman Matters can help you choose a high quality replacement door to match your needs.
- Protect all locks and their components. On ALL outside exit doors buy locks with locking tongues. This can be tested by holding the door open and locking the knob. Try to depress the tongue with your finger. If it can be pushed in the lock could easily be jimmied. If you find your locks are insufficient, give us a call. We will be happy to
replace them for you.
- Put window stops on all first floor and basement window frames. The best kind go through a moveable frame and lock in place.
- Brace doorframes and put multiple locks on all exterior doors. Bracing can be hidden behind the door frames internal molding and will not be noticeable from the inside or outside. A piece of steel stripping makes great bracing. Our skilled craftsman can install bracing while not affecting the aesthetics of your home.
- While installing bracing, also replace short screws in the door frame strike plate with longer 1 ½ or 2" screws.
- Get and close heavy drapes, preventing burglars from seeing inside.
- Make sure your sliding doors and windows are
installed correctly. An estimated one quarter of glass doors and windows are installed backwards! The criminal can easily lift out the panel and enter.
- Install motion detectors in areas where people should NOT be. It is ineffective to put the lights only on the front porch. More likely than not if triggered the lights will not be seen. Instead install them on the sides and the back of the home, and arrange the light so they will catch your attention if activated.
