| Home Maintenance tips for Autumn |
As the seasons slowly change we slip into the comfort zone of mild temperatures and brisk autumn air. Most of us have turned off our air conditioners but we are not quite ready to start the furnace up for the season. Now is the time to prepare for the winter season, before it is a necessity and the temperature plummets. With increased energy costs across the board, we will all be feeling a pinch in our budget if preparations are not made now, while the climate is mild.
1. Use incense to check for drafts in your home. Hold a burning stick of incense around closed windows and doors. Pay attention to the smoke. If it drifts quickly away from the window, you have a draft.
2. If you didn't have time to weatherize your home over the summer, do it now. Caulk and weatherstrip any doors and windows that leak.
3. Make sure all ductwork is sealed at joints and intersections with duct sealer or silicone caulk. Ducts can be sealed using foil backed tape or silicone caulk.
4. Install a programmable thermostat. These thermostats can save up to 15% on energy costs.
5. Never use a fireplace as a heat source for your home. The cold air introduced to a warm room through an open flue isn't as efficient as sealing off the flue and using the primary source of heat.
6. Set the thermostat to sixty-five degrees for at least eight hours a day. While away at work or nestled in bed is the best time.
